inexpensive recording gear

Hi guys, I have been using a hand held Zoom H1 recorder for recording our band. I record every rehearsal and gig with it. I use it to listen to myself mainly to see how I am doing. I mount it to a mic stand just behind me on the left so I can push the record button at the beginning of each song. This is a cheep 100.00 instrument that serves my purpose of hearing myself. But, Im wanting to step up a bit and record the entire band with a little more quality. Im not talking about setting up a studio or anything, just spending maybe 500.00 tops on something better that wont require a PC or mac. Any ideas or am I dreaming here?

Thank you!

Try the Zoom H4n or H6. With the H6 you can record your drums with the xy-mics, and line or mic the other instruments (4 mono tracks) on separate channels (depending on how many you are). I have been doing this for some time now with my electric group, and the sound quality that you can achieve with some mixing skills is impressive.

Those Zoom things are great. Recorded some of my live gigs with one and you get a pretty damn good sound for what it is. Couldn't tell you the model, but one with two mics and two line ins from the desk - brilliant!

The mixing desk from the PA - what do you guys call it? Everything's different in other countries...;)

We have a cheep Pa system and a few mics is all. Im sure one of the guys here would know how to connect it through the PA. This sounds interesting. My Zoom H1 does a pretty amazing job for what it is so I can imaging your setup would be a huge improvement.

We have two H4Ns and they are pretty great for home studio recording. You can run lines from it *and* use the attached condenser mics. By now they have gone way down in price, too.....
