ID this kit? 50's mahogany?

Loading...

not sure what this kit is, but guessing MIJ based on hardware, only marking anywhere is on one tom mount plate says JAPAN, but other than that I see no date stamps or anything. Bought it for 50 bucks off somebody claiming it was their dad's 50's mahogany kit. Definately needs new heads and a reglue/rewrap, harware cleaning. Is it worth the effort and $ for this kit to restore

Well-luan(lauan)is mahogany-just not THE mahogany (african). It looks like they have been recovered with contact paper or something like it.Jonnistix or Mikey would know the details via the lugs and spur mounts.60's MIJ.The 12 looks different than the rest.Maybe added later.

Lauan is called "Philippine mahogany", but it's not related at all to the "true" Central American or African mahoganies.

Used for drums i really dont think you will hear that much difference where the wood comes from.Guitars and other more "delicate" instruments perhaps

Your set is 60s late M.I.J. as teverson-sr said the set has been recover in contact paper it the finish still on the drums under it??..The drums are a mix set the 12 is a Star[slingerland copy lugs],but the bass drum 13" tom and floor tom are made by pearl,Also leg mounts on bass drum are pearl but to me the tom mount looks Star to me..Over all a good set to fix up and it will sound good--Mikey

I have some questions. First, Welcome to the forum. Now, on with the grilling. As Mikey points out, they are late-mid 60s as both Pearl and Star went to 6 and 9 ply shells in mid-67.

1) Are the shells all the same?

2) The lugs all appear to be mismatched, is this correct?

3) If you like, I can make some suggestions to make this a better sounding and more responsive kit. Get a front hoop on the bass....

4) Is there any shell seperation or rings coming loose?

5) Play the snot out of them, then when you are ready to get them gone, get in touch with me and I can help out with that as well.
