Help Slingy Bass Drum rehab

From Fayray

Not sure where you're at with the snare but if the problem is a fine, rough, raised pitting on the surface of the chrome then rubbing with aluminium foil and vinegar will work well. The foil is soft and won't scratch the chrome. It's also good on rusted hoops. If the chrome is flaking or perforated then there's not much that can be done. The pictures show a before and after. The foil did most of the work and I finished with a metal polish and wax. I actually used foil and water but I'm told that vinegar will work even better. Good luck.

If you weren't a fellow VDF member, I'd say your "before" picture was a stock photo off of the net of a basket case snare or that you were showing me 2 different drums.

That's amazing-jaw dropping awesome. Another gem saved! Too new to the rehab end, I haven't tried the aluminum foil technique yet, but I will....

I'm 100% over-joyed with my Slingy snare after a major clean up and a finish off with Simmichrome--all excellent advice from guys here. The snare is ready for a re-assemble and premier showing. All I'm waiting for to complete the snare project are new hoops from drummaker. ( I had no clue my wait could be very long. I hope I didn't make an error by ordering there...guys on here are pretty upset....). We shall see. Keep on Pl

finding 2 of those drums for a before and after would have been a stretch:)

To be honest I had no idea how well the foil would work but I wasn't getting anywhere with just polish, just finger blisters and torn rags. It's very good on hoops and stands that have a lot of surface rust too.

Longjohn - Thanks mate. It truly is a piece of engineering art that old Bev

Guys, I've been traveling for business last couple of weeks. I'm home for a spell and can once again give some attention to the rehab.

I placed a listing on WTB and had no luck on eBay for period correct Slingy white batter heads with the "square" Slingerland logo in black. It's important to get some return investment out of this rehab by selling---and soon. So time is not on my side.

So, what would now be the best heads to put on this set? I've already purchased a Remo Ambassador white coated for the Buddy Rich snare and I have what appears to be the original Remo snare side head.

I need reso heads for the 24" BD, 13" and 16" toms. And batter heads for the BD, 16" and 18" FT. I have one lone Slingy batter square logo head for the 13" that was salvaged from the original purchase.

Update on the shells is that all have come back from the cabinet maker with several coats of poly. Looking super and smooth. I have yet to take on the lifted inner ply on the BD repair mentioned earlier. Maybe this week...

Too much advice is welcomed.....Help2

I thought all you guys might appreciate a status report since this rehab has been slow-going and my day job, as usual, interferes with my drums!

I am about, what I'd guess, 2/3s of the way through this rehab. Pictured below are the shells (24, 13, 16, 18 & BR snare). The shells, effective today, have all been re-sprayed including the hoops, worked over the BR snare with Simmichrome and painstakingly de-rusted and cleaned up the snare nuts and bolts. Got repo stick saver rims.

I found a complete hardware package here on VDF from andrewdunsmore. Beyond awesome!

We're getting there!

I'm now purchasing Remo Ambassadors as $$$ allows as Slingy square logo heads are hard to find. Still working on the chromes-ugh, and this weekend I hope to work on the lifted inner ply on the BD.

Without you guys, this rehab would be below mediocre at best. Many thanks. Stay tuned. Dean Keep on Pl

Guys, this monstrous Slingy rehab fits the ultimate description "labor of love." Finally finished and here's the pics for your viewing pleasure. WOW, not sure how to thank you ALL for figuratively holding my hand step by step as I went through the process and boy, did I learn. Sheesh, every step had a learning curve, but the advice here made it MUCH easier. I started with rust, moisture damage, missing parts---what a way to get initiated! Not afraid to take on the most daunting of basket case drum sets now.

My enjoyment of drums has increased 10-fold being able to call on guys like you. Bowing Dean
