Gretsch project

From thornbeck

Cool project. That's a mid 60's shell. The special "silver sealer" on the inside of the shell is just aluminum fence post paint. You can use Rustoleum silver/aluminum paint to match his other drums.Do you still need the Gretsch mount for the shell? I might have one just like that in my limited parts stash. Steve Maxwell sells them new for $48. I could probably do $20 plus shipping. I just need to check on the condition tonight.-Tim

Yes we do need the mount, like the one I have pictures in the wanted section. That would be great Tim!

Thank you!

The badge is the Drop "G" found on the USA Custom drums. It shouldn't be hard to find one.

If you are going to install mufflers, you might want to consider getting new. Older original mufflers have the chance of rattling. Plus, this drum is going to look brand new when you're done, so new mufflers will look better. Steve Maxwell sells them new for $26.50 each.

Here is what I mean, it has one vertical butt joint but also has a few horizontal joints.

That clears it up. second class method, it looks and probably was a long tube made to chop to sizes.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Typical Gretsch (Jasper) of the period, especially for a shell that was picked to be wrapped.

That's the classic RB bearing edge and will reduce the resonance and soften the stick attack due to the amount of shell contacting the head. If his toms have a later version edge they will have a bit more resonance as well as stick attack.

The Band

Never play it the same way once.

I had a 13/16/24 set in Sky Blue Pearl and they sounded like s)-(it. Strange, wonky tone. Got rid of them quick. The opposite of the normal, modern Gretsch bearing edges. Too bad because they were nice looking original drums. Also, straight ft legs which didn't help.

Jeff, I just noticed the damper holes. Take your speed square and check the alignment of the drilling to the edges. I think it`s F`d and wonder if a damper will fit and work correct.
