Tommyp,Thank you for the added info... and I'm probably going to go with the earlier, no tone control version. Although the FG shell may warrant it... but of course it can be added later. What about the depth? What are yours? And are yours' the painted interiors, or the natural? (I guess that may not matter, as mine will be painted anyway!)As for the strainer, in reality the Zoomatic strainer is actually what I meant when I said standard... but to be honest, I was having an honest-to-goodness brain f*rt when I started this thread, and couldn't think for the life of me what that was called! Thanks again,Bill

Bill!

Allow me to add: The interiors on BOTH mine are painted. They all were up until around the mid 70's. Shell interiors went back to clear and the re-rings disappeared too. Just out of curiosity.. ( and for the record, I LOVE the idea of this drum in fiberglass... as would have Buddy! ) .. does the fiberglass shell have re-rings? I have seen fiberglass drums with.. and without. Curious on the Pearl's!

No re-rings. Very simple shell.

So, the chocolate milk interior will work out great.

Yes, I've heard the stories on how BR liked the FG shells... would even try to sneak in a Fibes snare with his Slingerland kits!

OK... looks like I'll have to paint mine with "chocolate milk". What paint comes close to this?

I've also got the earlier Zoomatic from my Artist snare drum, that uses the narrow gate for string to hold the snare wires. I also have a "New Zoomatic" that was designed for either string or strap. I also had the back piece modified with the cutout to clear the hoop... if needed. I'll use my COB Stick Savers, AKA "Rim Shot Counterhoop" from my Artist. Really looking forward to my 4x14 BR snare drum!

Bill!

...oh no, he MORE than TRIED to sneak in a Fibes snare... he DID SO on many occasions, and in full view. That was Buddy. Everyone knows about the infamous Fibes SFT 690/COF on the cover of the LIVE in London album.. ( Ronnie Scotts ) .. shown in plain view as well as his Slingerland's, but...

... Buddy had been trying fiberglass snare drums for a long time prior. He really liked the crispness and projection. During his Rogers endorsement.. ( and he liked the Rogers too I might add ) .. he was caught using a fiberglass drum DISGUISED as a Rogers Dynasonic, and was asked to not play it. He complied, as he actually really liked Joe Thompson. But then... he was "caught" again playing an actual prototype Fibes 690/COF with his Rogers, and was again asked to cease, although this was towards the end of that endorsement as CBS/Fender had just bought Rogers. He was leaving anyway, so once again pics surfaced of Buddy playing a...

Trixon BR metal shell snare drum with his Rogers! Buddy. ALWAYS after the perfect snare drum, and truth be told... I believe he found it in the Fibes SFT/690 COF as he went BACK to that snare too many times for it to be just a coincidence! Fiberglass!!

When I did a 4X14 BR some years back, I matched the paint to the interior of my ORIGINAL WMP 4X14 BR. I can do a couple things here:

Put up a pic of the interior.. or .. get you guys a match that can be made in say Benjamin Moore which you could buy pretty much anywhere. Your drum sounds like a BEAUTY!!

Gravy!Buenos "notches" ! Sorry... couldn't help myself. No... on the earlier Zoomatics there were no notches cut out or what was later referred to as "the idiot tab" either. These are FULL on the backside of the throw. Interestingly, the Zoomatic is an EXCELLENT thow-off, and works exactly as it was designed. It was the "drummers" that didn't quite get HOW it was supposed to function. The Zoomatic's were constantly over-tensioned causing them to either literally split in half, or press into the hoop and/or shell of the drum. Slingerland's fix was the "idiot tab" on the back, and then to actually "notch out" the back portion of the throw for more clearance. Those "mods" happened on the LATER Zoomatic's though. Mine being first production don't have either "mod"... and work perfectly! The key is in HOW you set up the snare wires to Zoomatic tension/position.Tommyp

I've got this baby all marked up ready to drill holes. The "up and down" lugs were pretty easy to figure out positioning, as was the butt... but I'm at a stand-still on drilling the 3 holes for the Zoomatic. I have one that is NOT slotted in the back. I also have some marching drums to use as a template for drilling the holes... BUT was it installed lower to the snare side edge than the marching drums were?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Yes!! It doesn't appear to be positioned any lower than the marching drums!

Thanks for your speedy reply!

Mark, a while back Bill posted a rattle can paint he used that came pretty close to the chocolate milk interiors. It's been a while but pretty sure it was a Krylon color called "Pebble" and think it's a satin finish. My 68 LBP Slingerland bass was painted black on the inside. So I bought a can of this at Home Depot and painted the inside. 1 can was just enough to cover the black and the color a very close match to the rest of my shells. Seeing how the CM interior paint varied in shade and depth between batches I was very pleased with the results. I also made a "P" out of masking tape and stuck it on the inside to look like the ink stamps we see inside some shells. With the interior already black I figured what the heck. It looks pretty good. Cool Dude

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Glenn,

Thanks for reminding what the color was. I couldn't remember. No offense intended towards Slingerland, but I just don't work on them often enough to remember details about previous rehab jobs and I'm really bad about NOT documenting everything.

Yes, Slingerland was very inconsistent in the amount of chocolate milk that went into the interiors. I've got two 10x15 marching drums shells that on the outside have the same wrap and look exactly the same, but one's interior looks like the CM is more of an attempt at some sort of stain with real thin coverage -- the wood grain shows through, but on the other it's coverage is complete like Ludwig's white paint of the sixties (only CM in color, of course!).

I just don't think they were real concerned about what the interiors looked like!
