Trick makes a pedal that is a compression spring pedal in a double pedal configuration. I'm not sure how much it would feel like a Speed King, if at all, but that's about the only one I know of on the market today that is a compression spring pedal like the Speed King.

The compression spring is a small part of the feel of that pedal. A huge part is the length of the "active" part of the footboard, or the part forward of the hinge.

The Speed King has a pretty short footboard compared to most other pedal designs, so the angle changes drastically over the length of the throw. When you compare that to a modern "longboard" design, which has a very short stroke in comparison, you get a radically different feel. Most other pedals (with a conventional, "modern"-style footboard) fall somewhere in-between on their feel.

The new Pearl Demon pedals have a convertible footboard which can be converted from a standard-length footboard to a longboard, but nothing as short as a Speed King. I've yet to play anything with a board so short, aside from "junior"-sized pedals.

I ordered a Trick Big Foot DBP a while back and still waiting for its arrival from back-order status.

They look really nice. Unfortunately, I've seen only one in a store, and most stores don't want you pulling out the tools and adjusting the pedal every which way just to see if it's something you can live with.

Same with the Pearl Demons. I've seen a couple, but right out of the box, they're not set to my liking, so I can't justify dropping the coin for something that expensive without knowing it'll work out.

BTW...I'm back to a Speed King again after a brief romance with a Ludwig Junior pedal, a Ludwig Universal Speedmaster pedal, and a Ghost pedal.

The Speed King always just feels so right...you know?

Yeah, the Speed King is it's OWN deal. The Pearl Eliminator has the ability to slide the entire footboard and hinge assembly forward or backward (3 positions, total), but nothing can make it feel like a Speed King.

Also, the Speed King is a "Direct Drive" pedal. That's a hot marketing buzz word right now, but the SK was doing it 60yrs ago. :)

That's one of the likeable features of the Trick is that it can become two single pedals (as can some of the others).

I did try the Tama IC, DW-9000, Pearl Demon, Axis, and Trick in store. I wish that I could offer a real world evaluation of the pedals too -- after living with them for a while -- rather than just the in-store impression.

I have read more than a few user review complaints about the DW linkage to want to steer clear of it. So I had it narrowed down to the Pearl Demon and Trick pedals. I think that Pearl is putting out some reallty outstanding hardware and almost went with a grand-slam of their equipment, but didn't choose their pedals (did get the S-2000 snare drum stand, D-2000 BR throne, and the H-2000 HH stand).

I'm transitioning from a pair of Caroline ASBA's, that I play pretty far back on... so I really like the long board pedals like Trick.
