So I finally got some inspiration on the drum with the Celtic knot. I had originally thought that I placed the knot on the front of the drum but the pattern was actually on the side above where the snare strainer would go. I didn't want to pull it off and start over because it took too long to set up so it is now one of two drums I am building that is being designed for a the Renaissance Faire crowds. Here's where I am at with that drum now.

Front Design

Copper leaf was brushed in on this. (I forgot what a pain in the ass this stuff is to work with.) And tape removed to leave this design on the front of the drum.

Hoops sanded and glued and getting ready for stain. (Thanks Glenn)

The original knot on the side

Opposing side so I went with opposing colors.

Here is the other 15" shell I have been working on. Nice maple shell that I will most likely keep as a more traditional style rope tension marcher for now.

I absolutely hated the first stain job here on the hoops, there was too much blue in it and looked horrible against the 2 other shades of green already going on here.

So I stripped them down and restained them with the leather dye so now the ears and hoops match. I am much happier with the results now.

Just a couple for today. Will be spending the day with my kids so no progress until tomorrow.

This is another one that I am working on with the Ren Faire crowds in mind.

I started with a 16" x 15" floor tom since this is just a prototype. If this is successful I will offer these with new shells and several different color variations. (Black/Red, Black/Green, Black/Yellow, Black/Purple)

The wrap came off so clean it was almost a shame to cover up the shell. The remaining glue was as smooth as glass and looked like a polished natural wood finish.

I wrapped the shell in a leather that was tooled to look like alligator skin with visions of this looking like dragon skin when it's done. It does add a bit of weight to the shell and will shorten the resonance a little bit but I don't think that will be much of an issue since this is going to be a drum played outside.

I then dyed the leather red and sprayed on a black fade followed by some antiquing to make it look aged and not new.

A few more updates.

For the red dragon skin drum above I am going with a black snare adjuster, gun metal air grommet and am also considering dying the snare cords black but I will have to experiment with that.

And here is a look at the ears for this one. The ears still need to be tied and glued.

I also finally found pictures of what the other dragon drum looked like before I pulled it apart.
