That's the one! Clapping Happy2

More second line... I think this will give you a good feel for the approach to rhythms and grooves. Stanton talks about how the clave' rhythm is at the core of all these New Orleans grooves. Very syncopated stuff. Not much lands 'on the beat' these cats play 'around' it, the 'time' (where the 1 is,) is more 'suggested' than it is, 'stated'. New Orleans drumming at its best. Here's Johnny and Stanton doing a clinic.

Thanks! Neat stuff, the relationship between Jabo & the charleston. I love Stantons' playing (big respect!), but he always seems heavy handed to me. Mr. Vidacovich plays quietly and subtly to back Stanton on here. True zen!

True! But then, the cat has a BIG sound! Stanton hits the drums hard but he always gets the job done and he manages to pull great BIG sounds out of the kit. It's just his 'style'. Because of Stanton I incorporated a 13" Pandiero into my set-up about three/four years ago. Stanton always sounds like more than one drummer is playing, I really dig that sound. The addition of the jingles and the almost bass drum sound of the Pandiero helps to achieve the effect. Lots of smoke and mirrors, but damn, it works!

Didn't mean to sound negative ( : He has BIG sound and lots of energy for sure!! The kind of playing that sounds great through a huge line array melded with phat hip-hop beats!

I finally got to see him last summer in Québec City with Galactic. It was his birthday and there were lots of fellow drummers at the show. Lots of fun! Then I went to my houseband jam session gig and Galactic show up! There were lots of people around Stanton, so I just shook his hand and talked a bit with the keyboardist and bassist. Really down to earth guys. The drummer for Osaka Monorail also jammed with us. Epic!!

So, between the Pandiero and your HHOT you've got crazy auxiliary action happening! Rolling polyrhythmic thunder! The Pandiero bass end makes so much sense added to a drum set. I know guys that use only the Pandiero (with an ATM-35) to accompany bands in the MPB style. Freaks me out! I'd just have to sit down and practice it to no end before I'd even think of incorporating it live. Probably like you are doing with your HHot.

Gotta go load drums into the car. Rehearsal awaits. Thanks for the inspiration!

LOL - When somebody lays a bunch of compliments on you it's the better part of modesty/humility to redirect the conversation away from yourself in all cases. In this case, it evolved naturally and it went where it went. Because I love the New Orleans second line/Indian style so much, it's an easy subject for me to get drawn into. I've been studying and learning to play this stuff by myself in my basement for the last 4/5 years. I welcome -any- opportunity to talk about it with other drummers. Hope I haven't over-done the video clips. It's just the simplest, best way to make some points. Easier than trying to explain it all in hand-written postings.

Wow. Johnny V is a TRIP!!! I want some of what he's smoking.

Love the basketball metaphor. The real deal, for sure.

Thanks for posting this stuff.
