Johnny still plays! But his long suit is as a teacher. He does a ton of clinics and Master classes during the year. If I was down south, I'd save my nickels and dimes and buy some of his time. Johnny bases a lot of his own grooves on the clave' rhythms; 3/2 and 2/3. All you really have to do to get a good New Orleans groove going is to play a steady clave' ostinato on the bottom-end (bass drum) boom, boom, boom,....boom-boom and cut loose with 'off the beat' accented triplet feel stuff on top. It just swings hard. Glad to hear the tradition is being passed on to the next crop of players. It must be gratifying for you to be a part of that teaching effort.

Thanks Mick for starting this thread.

After I saw this thread, I showed my son some videos of Second Line Drumming last night. He went straight to the kit and spent about 45 minutes working on different Second Line patterns and fills. Then he realized Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover was a variation of Second Line.

Instruction isn't just face-to-face. Reading this tread caused me to research Second Line Drumming videos, which allowed me to share those videos with my son, which inspired him to practice Second Line techniques for 45 minutes last night. :)

Tim - Here's a simple pattern you can teach him that he'll have a ton of fun with: RRL RRL RL: (Repeat) Accent the last right hand note pattern. The bass drum follows by being played simultaneously with -beat one- of each triplet group as well as the first R of the two single strokes group. (Follows the right hand.) You'll hear that the sticking pattern produces (almost automatically) a shuffle type feel.

To start... cross-stick/stick click all the left hand notes and play all the right hand notes on the outer edge of the snare drum. (ala playing a Bossa Nova)

Next round, play the right hand notes on a cowbell and left hand notes on the snare.

Third round, play the left hand notes on the toms; RRL (rack tom) RRL (floor tom) etc. Play all right hand notes on the ride cymbal or bell of the ride. With the steady ostinato going on the bass drum, this pattern swings really hard. Great groove. So many great variations from one pattern. Remember, stick strictly to the RRL RRL RL pattern throughout.

Here is a clip where Stanton uses this pattern. The man is wailing on the drums so it might be hard to spot when it comes up, but it is being used here in at least four variations. As you'll hear... it kills! Experiment with it. Move it around on the drums. You won't believe how much mileage you're going to get from this one sticking pattern.

> Would love to see some vids of you playing, Purdie!LOL - That is turning out to be the bane of my existence! I have one guy here at VDF that doubts I can play at all because I don't have any You Tube video proving that I can. DOHI have a video-cam, I just have to buy a charger for the battery. (Not real high on my priority list.) If/when I can, I'll shoot some video and post it up for my friends, but I'd much rather have people like Mick -who have actually heard me play- to speak for themselves. I won't toot it myself, but I have no problem with somebody else tooting the horn for me! I can play my a$$ off. I just don't feel a compelling need to 'prove it'. I'm from an 'analog' pre-Internet generation. I'm 64, just never thought to video myself and then post it somewhere. It just wouldn't occur to me.You Tube! The be all and end all of modern existence. If you're not on You Tube, you don't exist! Hilarious. I'm like Joe Walsh... an analog man living in a digital world!John

Glenn, Here's a full version from You Tube. I'm not sure which album that's on, recent one I think, but if you google him, it'll turn up in his discography.
