602 ride or zildjian Rock ride?

Loading...

I have a dilema, I need a ride for big band. How well do paiste 602s project?- what are they like. The ones I use now ( 22" 40s trans stamp ride, 20" 50s light ride, meinl 20" traditional ping ride) are nice but they are just getting lost in the wall of sound of the band ending up just sounding to muddy not cutting through. I need to make a choice- I have to send the meinl ride back to the u.s. Either straight refund OR use credit towards the other But pay more ( double shipping) and go for a paiste 602 20" ride which on the soundfile do sound great . , however I can get a 21" zildjian Rock ride local(ish) which I've heard buddy rich did sometimes use - I'm no buddy rich though!. Would I be happy with it? And what about 602s for this type of thing. Which one?

Of course the only time I had a tinker on the Rock ride it was placed in the middle of a stack of other cymbals thus possibly drying the sound out a bit!!....? electricit. I swear this is cracking me up though, in fact driving Me quite crazy. Cooked Egg

The 602 med ride have nicer tone and more crashability IMO... The 21" rock is more defined & will cut through more ... I do think the 70's Rock ride were a great cymbal.. played a 70's for around 10 years in a fairly loud & often unmiked band and it did the job.. wish I'd kept it..

Cheers

Yes I realy know what your saying have a few rides that have amazing sound and tone BUT unfortunately they just don't seem to cut through the mix when band gets loud. Which is most of the time. And I do value good tone.

Maybe my hearings deteriated and I can't hear the high end! I think I'm possibly detecting a 'hint' that the 602 might not project that well?

The 602 reminds me of a 1001 series that I had.. very similar weight & tone.. Not as defined as the rock ride.. and at volume you will need to play harder on a 602..

I'm now thinking I might just cut my losses and stay as I am. Get a refund on the meinl and keep the cash, still with the same problem though, But if I do decide, there probably popping up on eBay anyway.

I cant speak for the 602.. but I do own a Zildjian 21" Rock Ride. The Rock Ride will cut through any type of music. Great solid definition, especially with a nylon tip stick. Loud!! It's downside is that it isn't very crash-a-ble.. sure, you can bash the heck out of it and it will still cut through, but it doesn't have a smooth crash to it. I tend to use it more when I pick of funk and rock gigs but when I was in high school, we did have one that we used for jazz/big band and it worked well. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

You should also keep an "ear out" for a Sabian 21" Rock Ride.... If you are considering Zildjian. The Sabian is very similar in attributes but seems to pull less $...

I bought a new 21" Rock Ride when they came out in the 70's. GREAT sounding cymbal. Nice clear bell and great stick on the body. I always use wood tips too. Wish I never sold that one.
