50's Gretsch Find with Minor Restore

Loading...

I just picked up this kit locally. It's a 50's Gretsch 13, 16, 22 w/matching 6.5 snare. I'm thinking the snare is the Floor Show model and the kit is the Bop Kit with the optional 22 bass drum instead of 20. Overall, it's in pretty good shape for a kit this old. Finish is good with no real issues, just needs a good cleaning. Gray has turned to the greenish color. The kit mostly needs a cleaning and lube, except for a couple minor issues.

Check the pics & tell me what you know or think.

Here's what I'm finding as I take it apart that you may not see in the pics. The rest is pretty obvious:

- The snare & toms tension rods are all original except for one. The T rods & claws are all original except for 2. All the T rods are bent to some degree, some more than others.

- All the bearing edges are pretty clean. The BD and toms are slightly out of round by about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch depending on the drum. I haven't tried to tune them up yet to see how bad off they are yet.

- Tom hoops are good but slightly out of round (they're brass, so they can be easily fixed).

- Missing badges on snare & BD.

- Some gnarly corrosion on the snare hoops in one place. Not sure what happened there.

- Missing or unoriginal tension screws on BD leg & cymbal mount. Nothing stripped.

**Couple of things I'll be searching VDF for solutions:

- BD leg & cymbal mount tension screws

- Proper tension rod cleaning & lube methods

- What to do about the ply separation on the snare

Super-sweet find, gonna be a real gem! The BD T-rods look almost methodically bent, but probably just each was treated to a hard landing over the years...

There's a thread here where rods were left in vinegar for a day or two, worked really well, also Dawn dish detergent has been recommended many times.

Best of luck with the restore, looking forward to the pics!

Okay gents, I could use some feedback on this. I think I'm going to sell these, but need to know what are things I should do v. what I should leave for the next guy. If I were keeping it, I wouldn't do anything beyond what I've done to clean up, except replace the bad wing screws and straighten out the bent T rods. But for selling, what about things like missing badges on SD & BD, painting the BD hoops, etc. I've given it a pretty good cleaning & tuned them up with new heads. What do you suggest?

Surprised no one has chimed in yet. I'm no wheeler dealer but I'd say leave em as is for sale. The BD hoops are just nicely worked in for a lot of us, so I'd definitely not touch those up. Adding badges can't hurt, but for the rest, you might just change that one thing a prospective buyer wishes you hadn't.

Hope this helps...

Selling them as they are...

List them for sale with a price + shipping. (Sale section)

Be detailed & upfront about the condition...lots if pics & theyl sell.

If yr using this thread to "fish" for a price...it'll never sell smoothly.

Good luck.

It's a lovely kit, no doubt. No idea what you'd do with that snare hoop though, short of trying to source another one. As it is I'm sure that corrosion will affect the pricing, but I couldn't give you a figure.

But as for the rest, I agree with Mitch - clean them up as best you can but leave them as they are for the most part. I wouldn't do anymore than you've already done.

Good luck with it!

Oh, and that separation in the snare looks like a pretty easy glue and clamp job, but only if the urge takes you! :)

groovesonly, beauty of a kit especially with the matching snare. Except for the snare hoops all the issues are minor, cleaned up, those are going to be killer! I have a set of 53' Gretsch's with the same issue on the snare hoops, odd because all the other hoops are pretty nice?? Snare probably seen a lot more use and abuse. I remember as a kid taking drum lessons in school, we would be told to bring in our snare drums once or twice a week. Of course a snare drum is all I had but most of the kids had there very own kits. I'm making up for not having a kit back then now at the age of 60!! Selling or keeping, I'd fix all the issues and probably leave the hoops and clean them up a bit, period correct ones run about $75. and even those aren't perfect.
