$10 vintage Ludwig snare?

Loading...

I got lucky and picked up this snare today for $10 on CL. It came with a decent Ludwig stand, two sets of new sticks, and some VF brushes, so the drum was better than free!

I'm thinking it is a cut down marching snare or maybe a floor tom???

Am I right that the badge would be 1960's, and does it look like a three ply shell?

The hoops have a little chrome flaking, but the lugs will clean up great. Not sure if the shell is worth saving. The edges look fairly descent, but the lugs are mounted kinda tight together and it's just basically fugly.

Sorry about the sideways pics, they look fine on my computer desktop. The only way I have found to correct it is to open them in photoshop and then re-save them. Is there an easier way? It seems that every pic I take with my iphone has this issue on this site???

That badge is the last of the Chicago badges before Ludwig moved to Monroe (1984). The shell is not 3 ply. You can see more plies than that in the photo, and 6 ply was the standard shell by then.

Interesting. The badge places it in 1984. Beyond that hard to say as it doesn't match any model I'm familiar with...but certainly worth $10 regardless.

Mr. Toast,

The only way I have found to get around the image flipping is to take all photos landscape.

Thanks for the help folks.

The more I look it over, it has most definitely been cut down from a larger drum. Not the best cut job, but no where near the worst I've seen either. It's super heavy with all those lugs, but I'm going to clean it and put it back together. Maybe it has some red-neck engineered magic? If not, I may look for a deeper shell, or just part out the lugs.

Thanks again for the information.

Mr.Toast! I'm re-posting the pictures for you.

K.O. is correct about the year. And, yes, probably a cut-down marching snare or tom. Still, how can you go wrong for $10?!! You did good!

Sign of true master craftsmanship. Stradivarius did that.

Its most likely a cut down 14" Cutaway Tenor Tom from a set of marching tenors. If you cut the shell at the point where its cutaway from the factory (think north or stingray) its about a 5" shell.
