Apollo Kit

Loading...

I'm trying to obtain some information on an Apollo kit that I saw recently. I 'm trying to find out whether anyone actually collects this particular brand as well as the approximate age and value of this particular kit.

I wish I had a better pic but this is all I can offer. It was sent via cell phone and, obviously, isn't very clear.

As usual, thanks in advance for your time and your help!

I think Jonni may chime in but the picture is very fuzzy and I can only tell that the snare, one rack tom, and one floor tom and the bass are most likely original. They appear to have the sharktooth or teardrop lugs on them which indicates they're made by Star in the late 60s probably. I actually had and sold a blue satin flame Apollo set that was only the 20/13/16 and snare configuration. That set was fairly thick mahogany shells with roundover edges and gray painted interiors. It had a nice sound. I like the look of the offset lugs on the rack tom. I think they were going for a Sonor look. Not sure what I'd pay for one, I paid around $200 for that set but he threw in a Mapex piccolo snare and some other hardware and it sold for around $300 or maybe $250 or so if I remember correctly. The drums in the picture, if the 2nd rack and floor tom are original should be worth easily in that ballpark, they'd be great players..

Judging from the poor pic quality, and if it is complete (with no major issues like e.g. missing lugs, ripped finish etc.), US-$ 250 would be a very good deal, as the fitting snare is also there.

Looks like a 20-12-12-14 with a 16 and snare. Late 60s as Pounder says, and WMP to boot. Nice kit. It is indeed a Star and the lugs are Teardrops, offset was the norm because they are too close to each other on the 12 toms, so the offset them. They are likely the grey interiors with 9 ply shells and no re-rings. Those actually make good studio drums because they are easy to control. All drums should have a muffler as well.

I say the 16 looks added because the fade does not look to be the same. My Majestic kit is this config.

Hey, Jonni,

Any idea what a "reasonable price" for this kit might be?

Thanks!

200-300 tops. It is afterall, a complete kit. I would ask if they added the 16 later. I am not aware of the kits having 12-12-14-16-20. The normal 2 up with 20-14 is 2-12s. What are they asking? If they are thinking 500, you have a hard road because they just don't understand the true value of MIJ kits. Nice yes, highly valued, not really. I love them, but there is no way when you can buy a Slingerland for that kind of money. See my point?

Jonni:

There's a possibility that I might be able to see the kit tomorrow evening. It can probably be had for $150. I'm not totally sure at this time.

That is a sweeter deal. If he wavers at all when giving you his price, you know, him-hawing like "Well, I was, gee I dunno, thinking maybe I would like to get xxx.xx", it can't hurt to ask for less. Afterall, I paid $50 for mine, and it is basically the same kit. Well, mine came to me as 12-12-14-20+snare, but then I picked up a 16 later. The ft on mine is a 3 ply, btw, not the 9 ply. The toms should be 6 ply while the large ft and bass should be 9 ply. The reason I say offer less is, from the pix we can't tell if there is any damage. These wraps are brittle, and if it spent any time exposed to sun, Also, with that many drums, you are likely facing 40 hours of deep cleaning to get them in tip top shape, and possibly heads. If there any of the originals left on them, keep them, someone was asking for Apollo heads not long ago.
