Slingerland: Tom mounting hardware

Loading...

Hey all!

I have any early 60's Slingerland Modern Solo Outfit. Currently the tom tom mounts are flat tabs the toms slide down onto. The rivets of the female receiver plates are loose, causing both toms to sag.

I know I could replace the rivets, but I would prefer to upgrade. With my limited knowledge on these drums, I came to the conclusion that a "Super Set-O-Matic" (what I saw on ebay) setup might be the solution. Question is, if I managed to secure the necessary Set-O-Matic hardware, would it work without permanently modifying my kit?

I don't plan on selling it, but I would still like to keep it close to it's original condition.

Off the top of my head I see two potential issues:

1. The receiver mount on top of the bass drum is rectangular.

2. I am not sure if the toms have a hole for the excess rod.

Thanks.

Word is it bolts up and slides in with no modification to the bass drum mount or the toms. I have a 66 Modern Solo that I have been considering making the same modification to.

There have been a couple threads on here that indicated it is a good and easy mod to make to the tab mount kits.

Good luck.. post some follow up if you make it happen.

About that.

The bummer is the rectangular bass mount is not mounting friendly with the Set-O-Matic.

I'm showing a pic of them side by side.

The Super Set-O-Matic came a bit later, and I can't speak to that....

The way you can go with a Set-O-Matic config without replacing your rectangular bass mount is to find a post from a double set-o-matic tom stand.

It has the round tube instead of the D-shaped tube, and will fit your existing bass mount.

Also, with the one in the pic, the tom arms do not extend into the drum. I hope that is able to be seen.

The last pic is what you would wind up with.

The second pic is a clip and Set-O-Matic tom mount placed together with the mounting screws from one placed in the holes of the other showing that, at least, those two are interchangeable.

Be sure in your hunt that the post is round, and the tom arms are short.

Personally, I would repair or replace the clip mounts.

Lots cheaper, and of course original with no drilling of holes when you tire of looking for a Set-O-Matic tom stand and have to replace the bass mount.

I'd like to add a few things. The Set-o-Matic isn't without it's quirks, either. The phenolic ball can become loose on the down pipe and even wear to the point of not holding tightly. And,the reciever end can become "ovalled"after time, again causing a non-tightening situation.I've even seen an end snap right off the double tom version.I'd fix the clip mount, too.New Set-o-Matics were nice set ups. That was what-THIRTY years ago?

[COLOR="DarkRed"]I agree....any mod is a mod, although plenty of argument to say you are at least replacing it w/ hardware of the same mfr and round'about the same vintage...but the set-o's do post date the kit.

Plus, they really ARE pricey.....

Thanks for great info and pictures!

What I will do is start out with the repair of existing parts and see if that satisfies. As for price, I'm too concerned with it, if it accomplishes what I'm after. Within reason of course. So the next question is, should I repair what I have or should I purchase replacement units?

Repairs were already made, before I took possession of the kit, using replacement rivets which do not match. Can replacement rivets be picked up from somewhere? Or are there suitable alternatives?

I will post pictures of what I'm talking about later today if that helps any.

Thanks

Some pictures of what I am dealing with:

How they currently rest

A fair amount of play

I got the kit with these "repairs"

I'm talking with someone who has new old stock replacement pieces. Theoretically, should they reduce the amount of sag I'm experiencing now?

New mounts should help.

There is a fix for the play that will still be in that set up even after replacing or repairing the clip mounts.

What am I missing here? Am I not putting 2 and 2 together here? I read and reread the link and I have yet to figure it out.

OldSchool's hardware is like mine and he mentions something about a wood block but does not elaborate much. In the end, Rick steers him to Setomatic setup. What am I not seeing?

My Modern Solo came with a piece of rubber hose that was drilled and crimped to fit over the mounting tube and held the drums apart at the bottom. It worked really well but it was old and crumbling.

Since that hose was very old, dried and cracked; I made myself a little wood block that I drilled in the middle to fit over the mounting tube and shaped on the ends to fit against the rims. I painted it black and padded it with electrical tape. It holds the drum apart at the bottom and puts them at a slight inward angle.

It works really well but it is a bit of a homemade rig. That said, I do think it would last another 40 years, which is longer than I will last. :)
