I've thought about something similar, but never implemented anything. I was thinking of using felt. Were you using vinyl or rubber electrical tape?

Looks like I need to get to work.

Vinyl.. but I really like the felt idea... geez I got felt for muffler strips all over the place. Why didn't I think of that??Cool1

Clip-mounted timbales typically have the piece of wood you are describing on the stand to "keep em separated"....a rectangular shape with drum shaped cutouts on each side and a tube sized hole close to the middle,with felt glued to the cutout edges.Measure the distance between the two drums while someone holds them in the proper place.This will give you the width of the wood at the bottom of the drum cutout.Don't center the hole for the pipe between the cutouts-the distance is not even,since the drums are different diameters.The smaller drum should be slightly further away from the pipe.

Thanks for the tips. My toms are both 12" so the measuring part will be easy. Now I have to take the time to put something together.
