1960's Star

From Drumsteroo

I have to agree, you can probably get close to your asking price if the set was well presented.

Kelly is not the seller~he is the potential buyer. I still don't see how you guys arrive at your willingness to pay this much for thick mahogany shells when looking carefully and closely at CraigsList for a month will reveal at least one opportunity to pick up a Slingerland or Rogers for this kind of money. Star is one of my favorites, but that is too much to pay for a cool wrap on otherwise non-descript shells in my opinion. I love them, but no way will I pay this kind of money for them. I have seen far too many American kits go in this range to ever part with 500 for a standard issue MIJ. If, on the other hand, the shells have been worked by someone that knows what they are doing, mounted new heads and there are good cymbals and original stands included, that is another story.

What are the chances you will run across this scenario, short of a kit one of us has worked and owned?

Jonni - I do agree with you... However:

My recently restored Royal Star kit is going into the local drum store (Bentley's - He's just moved and if you ever get to Fresno you just have to see his new place). Anyhoo, I also agree with Pounder. I restored 'em, cleaned 'em and waxed 'em. I take their pix in a nice spot near the pool in my backyard. I get more for kits advertised like these than I would ever get if I stacked / set them up in the garage and shot pix of 'em.

It's truly all in the 'environment' or as Pounder said 'ergonomically correct[ness]' of the pix.

I think Dana (Bentley) said he would try them around the same price. If they sell there, they sell. If not... Looks like I get to goof around with a MIJ kit for a bit!

I also completely agree with mcjnic: These wraps DO NOT age well at all.

Of course this is all my opinion, and your mileage may vary...

Click the fishwaltz link below for more pix in an ergonomically correct location. :D

Great Royal Star kit. I was astonished to see that Star also copied the wrap of Premier's 'grey shimmer', which is the finish of my Premier's here in the Gallery.

I guess this set is underrated (what do you think, if you copare it with all the other great kits on your website?) It's a pity, that the kit doesn't come with the KingBeat snare drum. Nevertheless nice and complete condition.

No kidding, huh... That cymbal mount was envisioned and designed by drunk penguins for darn sure. I really think they didn't like what they saw on American kits, looked at something else in the industrial world and went with it. There are more knobs and adjustments on it than you need to fly the shuttle. And, it could have all been done with a floor tom leg mount and set screw...

Well, it kinda is the King Beat. Just an early version of it, with a normal snare throw off. I'm right in the middle of the restoration of a Tama Imperial Star King Beat snare. The earlier version. Very early 70's I think. This kit, as far as I can tell is very late 60's. The similarities are amazing with this snare and the Tama King Beat. I'm going to take some pix of the Royal Star snare when I get a moment, maybe this week. I'll post 'em on the web site of course, but here also.

As far as being under rated? Yeah, it is. This has the six plys, not like the three plys on the earlier MIJ kits. But it tunes and sounds pretty darn good! Now, comparing it to say a quality kit from the same era, American or European... not going come close. But, it's close enough! I mean I generally gig with the Gretsch Catalina kits. Not a whole lot of difference between the Royal Star and them...

Now... who wants to spew their coffee... I paid $10.00 for the kit. Got it off of C/L, and that was their asking price. It did need MAJOR cleaning, but heck!

Excited

They are the same drum. (the TAMA Imperial Star King Beat and the TAMA King Beat) The difference is the badge,as far as I know. The early Imperial Star and the TAMA KingBeat are the same as even the early Star KingBeat from pre-73. This seems to be the year they strted to show the TAMA name publicly. I have seen the Star version from as early as 70, I think. There were a few prototypes out, then they started production after a few celebs gave them the thumbs up. The early TAMA snares have the Star name on the strainer. You see them come up for sale on the bay occasionally, and they go for 250-350 with that strainer and the TAMA badge.

Sorry, but no, I don't think that this one has the same KingBeat-shell. All KingBeats I've ever had, have

- only two groovings in the middle of the shell (not three, like this one) and

- a very heavy shell (approx. 4.5 kgs). fishwaltz: is yours that heavy?

Hi Ralf,

No, it isn't the same at all. What I should have said was this Royal Star snare seems to be the forerunner to the King Beat. There are some design qualities that are the same, but it is a far different drum. The King Beat I have weighs a ton compared to other snare drums.

You are very right, not the same drum at all...

The King Beat snare I have has the early Tama 'T' and is tagged 'Imperial Star' not 'Royal Star'.
