Pearl Lugs, 68-70

Loading...

I have been trying to pin down the date of the "Sparkling Gold Pearl" Astro kit I picked up a couple of weeks. The lugs have been a key to this. Although this is a stencil kit, of the highest quality, it is undoubtedly a 1969 version of the Pearl Thunder King. It is missing a 13" tom. The Pearl catalogs from 68 show Slingerland copy lugs, 69 shows the "Battleship" lugs, and 70 shows the "Diamond" lug we know as the universal lug used for a long time, into the stencils of Tiawan. It appears this battleship lug was used only one year:

I have seen too many of those battle ship lug Pearl drums floating around to believe they were only produced 1 or 2 years. I looked at my catalogs as well and you`re pretty much correct BUT I believe they were making certain models using battle ship lugs up into 1975. I have a 1975 DOWNBEAT kit that has battleship lugs. I also have a 69 Thunderking with the same battleships.

I also have two Thunderking blue sparkle toms with 74/76 badges with battle ship lugs. (Just a not I think battleships look great and are pretty strong) Can we a pic of your kit?

Here is my 74/74 Downbeat ( ugly color - a ivory/yellowed white (from age) but sounds wonderful)

....well, goes to show how well we know what we're talkin' about...silly catalogs, really now....7 years?

You appear to be missing a 12" tom from your T-K, I'm missing the 13. Mine would have more than likely had a different catalog name for the configuration as it is not a "Pearl", but I am almost positive the 13 is missing. Makes no sense to have a 22-12-16.

Anyway, I have not "finished" it yet. I hate the ringy sound of the chrome hoops and I decided to go with woodies. They are almost finished. Had to router the inlay channel and work in some large gitter to match the color. It will be an almost perfect match when complete. I had bought some orange glitter last year for a project the wife talked me out of and it was in the garage waiting patiently for this job. You see, even though the cataloged color is Sparkling Gold Pearl, this is more of a glitter. And since we live smack dab in the heart of Sooner Country, anything orange is percieved as a virus...our 2 biggest rivalries are Texas (pukey burnt orange) and Oklahoma State U...(Halloweenie orange). So selling this kit, at some point, will be a disaster around here. I may have to ebay this one. Well, maybe not, the guy that traded me for the last Star I saved is actually an OSU fan, so he would be my target.

Back to the hoops...they have got the inlay done and today I will begin finishing them in a slightly woody yet orange looking overall lacquer like the snare. When that is done, I shall show them off, if the 'naders keep at bay today, that is.

John, how dare you malign the beautiful and regal Burnt Orange!!!

If you have no luck selling those in Norman, you should post them on the Stillwater, Dallas, and Austin CL sites. Maybe you could meet a buyer half way? Those would be a great set for a UT frat-rock band. You should get a Longhorn emblem for the reso head! (Once the set is safely out of Norman, of course.)

And now we actually have no choice but to venture northwest to play football. And I, among a couple million other fans ruefully despise the officiating of the fruity conference we are now forced to join...ugh.

Fruity conference? That's pretty funny! I seem to remember a certain championship game a few years ago between USC and OU. What was the score of that game?

Being a Longhorn I really dont have a dog in this fight. However, the PAC 10 has done pretty well over the last several years in bowl games. And the Holiday Bowl was always fun to watch. (Wonder what that organization is going to do now?)

Ummm, and I'm very excited to see how the Astro set turns out...

I think it's to hard to try to pin point a time frame on these lug's used by pearl..I have seem about 30 or so set's made by pearl that have used the slingerland copy's of lug's from 1968-1975or so...I have also seem many drums made by pearl that have used the battleship lug's from about 1969-1975..As far the Pearl lug's in the 70's the last photo you posted these lug's are still used today on pearl drum's also alot of set's made by them...So like i said it's to hard to try to pen it down what year's..Mikey
