How Old is a vintage drummer? Last viewed: 10 seconds ago

I didn't want to say....but I will be 25 in August.....yeah 25, haha! I play vintage drums because of their sound and character....it's like they each have a story to tell.

I always appreciate the time VDF members have taken to teach a younger guy, such as myself, about the history and preservation of these fine instruments.....thanks! :D

Vintage but still kicking. I was created in 1942 started playing mid fifties and mutured playing most every type music as it progressed. I still play out at various times during the year and play most every day for the exercise. I play Ludwig drums ( 1968-69) Hollywood Oyster Black Pearls with Pearl double demon drives. Not a collector but have 3 sets in the studio.

I'm 44 and I've been into vintage drums and collecting the past 20 years. I tend to collect drums from the 50's and early 60's, not really the drums I grew up with which were mostly B/O Ludwigs, Tama Superstars and Yamaha Recording Customs.

You don't have a theory. You have a question that will eventually be worked into a specialized statement that you can test. That would become your hypothesis. I would suggest taking a random sampling from more than just this site if you hope to substantiate your leanings (bias). For the record, there are about fifty or so drummers and musicians I work with through my church. All but a few play vintage gear and most all are still in school. Most every studio I've recorded inhad multiple vintage kits and a huge variety of vintage snares. I assure you, there was no age limitations put on the drummers. I'm your average two thousand year old man.

Actually I do have a theory, which in the philosophical sense is a proposed explanation of a non-empirical phenomena. The subject matter of such a theory may consist of ideas as opposed to empirical data.

As such my idea (theory) is that; a) a majority of vintage drum players/collectors are of a certain age (approxamately 50-60 yrs. old)

b) as a result of our age, we put more value on drums of a certain era, c) which then impacts the demand, collectability and value of those drums.

Clearly, I am not speaking scientifically as I have no impirical data, merely anecdotal observation.

I've posted my theory here for comment and discussion not in an effort to prove or disprove, but for academic discourse, not unsimilar to the approach of the philosophers.

Just curious as to how old you really are, 2000 yr old man? In your post above you said "in school" what do you mean by that.

I am still 50 myself, and hope to remain for many years to come, although I will be celebrating my 1st anniversary of my semicentennial birthdate shortly.

2000 years old = That was a reference to The Two Thousand Year Old Man (Brooks/Reiner). Some brilliantly funny material.

"school" = private k-12 and college

I was under the impression that you were seeking data to quantify and justify your conclusion of ages associated with vintage drum collections. That would require a different definition of "theory".

Your definition of theory is the one based on situational explanations. I understand now. You don't actually wish to gather data, so much as present your idea to the forum in an effort to account for a period of drums.

I apologize. I'm just wired a bit different than this. I read your setup and identified the flaws of logic. I offered up some assistance in how you could actually run this and obtain solid data upon which to draw conclusions. Again, I just viewed your intent in error. I didn't realize your lack of desire to actually accumulate data.

My mistake. Again, I apologize.

No apology necessary, and thanks. Most people do use the scientific concept of a theory, I'm more philosopical, or am I? I'm just too lazy to do a scientific study properly, which leaves only anecdotal evidence.

Still I thought it might be an interesting topic for discussion and an informal poll could prove fun.

P.S, I have a fairly good recollection of the 2000 year old man, funny stuff, still holds up today. Still haven't weighed in on your age though.

Thanks again for your thoughts and comments.

Hit 41 yesterday. I started because a friend used to have a Drum store down in Santiago de Chile and he had many sets there. For some reason I gravitated toward the Ludwigs, Sonors and Slingerlands he had there...I started asking questions, then reading, then buying, then colecting, then HOARDING, then using whichever space is available in my house for vintage drums!!!!!Laughing HLaughing HLaughing H

I'm 52 in August, and not what you would call a collector.

The two kits I own are a 1978 Tama superstar and a 1970

Slingerland. The reason I play vintage gear is because I stopped

playing in 1983,and took it up again in 2000.Man am I glad I

didn't sell my kits when I look at some of todays drums.

Stevo.
