Hello, I´m new to this site

Jurgen,

Attached is a scan of the catalog photo. As Ralf said, your drums may not be Star after all, based on the tom mount. But it's definitely the same wrap.

This is perplexing, but the drums are not Pearl. The mount is clearly a replacement. Could be Star, could be Gibraltar, could be something off of a trashed set of Taiwan tubs...but the rest is Star.

Everything else, well, the lugs on the bass are correct for Star, as are the snare lugs and the the tom lugs. The strainers are clearly original, and they are Star. It is highly likely in the past someone decided, as do far too many people, that that Pearl mount is top shelf equipment!

St. Louis Music used Star for most of there drums early on, then switched to Pearl later as Star exited the market. This is evident in a catalog from the Apollo and Polaris mid 70s. For the early days, these were the top stuff. I honestly like the Star parts better than Pearl, but that is subjective. I like the overall appearance of them, and the ease of use of most of it.

Thanx, checker758, for introducing a copy of MY personal catalogue from

www.drumarchive.com ;)

Just to unravel this mystery:

I had a nice and longer email exchange contact with Jürgen and he stated that the Pearl tom mount was mounted AFTERWARDS and that the original holes (telling that there was a STAR mount before) are still visible.

It's definitely a STAR set!

...here some additional pics that show the bassdrum with/without tom holder bracket.

As jonnistix accredited relating to the lugs and - as everybody can see on Ralf´s nice link (the brochure, page 2, lower pic) the sign on the bassdrum front batter (and there´s one on the lower 12" batter, too) are similar - and definitely Star.

The Tom holder is a Pearl, on the chrome surface of it, when compared with the other (original Star) chrome surfaces of the rest of the kit, you can see that it is considerably younger.

My further concept for this will be a Tama (what else on a Star?;-)) tom holder of the Artstar ES series that´s leftover in my inventory. All I need to complete this are both the brackets for the BD and the 12" which I hope to get at my local vintage-dealer´s shop - don´t mind if they´re Tama or not, the main focus will be that these parts match the look of the rest of the drums.

But meanwhile I enjoy this baby anyway, and also my little girls do! (see below!)

Greetings Jürgen

Sweet! And so are the drums!

Hello!

Just wanted to post some updates to keep you in the loop.

Yesterday I could - for the first time - check out the restored set including the King Beat snare. New batters on the toms and on the bassdrum.

I´m so impressed how great this kit sounds! Incredible!

By the way, I´m still working on the tom-holder solution. The plate that will cover the ugly Pearl-conditioned holes in the bassdrum is in work. Also I got me a TAMA Omniball-holder at ebay that I decided to use instead of the Artstar ES-holder I mentioned a few posts ago. In fact, the ES looks too modern on this kit.

And hopefully I will be the owner of a tom holder base for the bassdrum that almost looks like the original - tomorrow, if I win the battle (at ebay)!

Below you can see some impressions of yesterday afternoon, testing my new baby!

Looking good,a lot of characterwith that kit

Thank you!

Yes, everyone looking at it or playing it says exactly the same!

This kit is my new addiction, and I´m still working on it to improve the sound, the look and the adequacy to today´s every-day use.

At the moment I´m waiting impatiently for the parcel-service every day to bring me the parts I got at ebay, that I need for further work.

Below you can see a little optical improvement (my opinion :-)).

Thanks again to all for the many nice replies and your kind advice! Cool1

Thank you, Ralf!

Was two hours of work to do, but I am also very pleased with that look!

Wanted it to look like some kind of "old-school-type".
