Hello, I´m new to this site

Very nice. Have you worked the edges at all? A good sanding will make a great differemce in the tuning as it will allow the heads to slide more easily. Also, put a good wax, a beeswax on them after you have sanded them to a 220 grit. Makes them so smooth and easy to tune.

Hi Jonni!

Hey, that´s a great idea! Although I sanded the edges, I never thought of waxing them - in fact, why didn´t I?DOH

I´ll try this out this weekend. The first parts for the tom holding system will be here tomorrowJump For Joy, so the work on the kit goes on anyway. And - all the parts I got at ebay are Tama, I decided to not accept any other parts on the drums. The look will be as close as possible to the original .

Above all I´m still thinking about the 14" floortom problem. When there´s no original drum available in this size, there must be another solution - maybe I´ll have one sooner as I thought. But more about this later on.

Once again a big thank-you to Jonni! Great suggest! I´ll report the results.

Regards, Jürgen

There is a member here who is in Italy, and he has a 16 in that wrap. It is in California. I see them occasionally at online sales sites. Keep your eye on ebay, they turn up from time to time, usually as 16s.

Now, at last...

...the ugly Pearl tom-holder is history! It won´t blemish my set anymore. (Man, I really hated this!!)

Today I received the parcel with all the important parts for the alteration.

The plates I had planned to cover the holes that were drilled into the drums for the Pearl-thing were not necessary at all. The "new" parts are big enough to hide the shame. So I only had to fit a few carriage bolts to seal the needless holes.

So I´m very happy now :) with this final solution!

Maybe some of you might say, that this is "blasphemy" on this kit, but: it´s a compromise between the original thing and, for my opinion, a better handling and more durability.

What do you think?

Thanks and greets, Jürgen

It's just great and stringent that you have used later TAMA spare parts to complete this old Bollero (= STAR) kit together again!

Now, if you want to get rid of the high, ringing tone that annoyingly emminates from the bass, get rid of the metal hoops. Keep them as original, but order some wood hoops, it will make a huge difference in the sound if the bass. I am tossing aside the chrome in favor of wood as my orange glitter Astro has those hideous things and they ring out like a bell, a badly tuned bell.

So much for my rant on chrome hoops....

Hi!

Thank you, Ralf! These were my exact thoughts, when I saw these parts on ebay.

Thanks for your advice, Jonni, but... ...my bassdrum has a full, deep "wock" without resonating hoops, and if they do, it´s so little that it doesn´t disturb.

I don´t know which cross sectional profile these hoops have you´re complaining about, maybe the ringin´ has to do with this?

Mine are rather complex in profile (see below) what perhaps might do some dampening on the hoop itself...

Have you ever thought of drilling a (or better two - one for breathing) 2 or 3 mm-hole(s) on the bottom side of the hoop and fill the hollow space inside it with something like silicone? Sure, this will increase weight, but maybe you can keep the look with the original hoops without the badly tuned bell-sound. This would be the method I´d choose first before converting to wood hoops.

Or maybe your problems regard to the springs inside the lugs? I stopped a phenomenon similar-sounding as the one you described on my Sonor Champion by removing each lug and putting some rubber foam inside which prevented the springs from being noisy. Did this on all drums, and the sound improved considerably.

Greets Jürgen

As a part of my cleansing protocol on each set, I also isolate the springs using cotton. As for the hoops, they are the same profile as yours. These shells are different in that they are more dense than mahogany. They are maple inner and outer with a thick mahogany core. The ringing is certainly coming from the hoops and I don't really like the llok of the chrome hoops on this kit anyway. For filling them, never reallt thought about it. they are heavy as is and since I really don't like them, I will be exchanging them for wood. Just a thought for you. However, the chrome goes well with your wrap, it matches it well.
