Soundgarden ><Black Hole Sun, Dw's again

Come on man! You're always dad talkin' me. Knock it off. You have a hard time letting others have opinions it seems.

 Just stating my view.

From thisbright14

All of those video examples are of bands with multi million dollar recording budgets and access to the highest of end audio manipulation tools. How does that prove anything but my point? DW has NOTHING to do with it............At least two of those other bands aren't using DW and their drums sound very similar on the recordings.

That's my point exactly, actually.

Also Dave Grohl used a Black Beauty for Nirvana's "In Utero". He used a TAMA birch snare on "Nevermind"...and now he endorses DW. Does he record with DW? Who knows! Who cares? Do you like how DW sounds? Do I? WHO CARES!!! This is not the argument!

They ran the drums through a PA in a huge room and re-recorded them and used some of that in the drum mix on Nevermind...same for Superunknown.

What point in support of DW could you possibly be making? Its all just funny to me.

Also...you guys are the ones that keep making this about some sort of definitive "I hate everything that is DW stance". Look above. I just said they can sound good. How does that add up to me "hating" them?

Again, it is just MY OPINION that they aren't the coolest sounding drums out there. It is however FACT that using an example of a video where a drummer is seen at a DW kit playing a tune with a multi million dollar recording budget as backup for DW drums sound is just ridiculous. THAT is what this thread is about.

L-D back me up here!

Not that my opinion matters AT ALL. Not that people should care one way or the other what sounds good to me. Not that people should care one way or another what sounds BAD to me....but since you asked Kevin and you seem like you are one of the coolest/nicest guys on the forum:

In terms of old stuff I personally dig Cleveland/Dayton Rogers lately. The 20/13/16 Dayton kit I have really did it for me on a couple of sessions last week and if I had a pile of cash I would find a 14 to add to the mix. Also really like bigger sizes in the 70's clear interior Ludwigs as of late. I have a 24/13/16 kit that rocks. Most things Slingerland have been stoking me out lately as well. Been hitting my 61 Student RK lately and it is great. Excited to get my new Artist Model snare up and running to see what it can do. My main gigging kit is a 5 ply 70's Slingy rewrapped in black sparkle. Not the best sounding kit I have ever heard, but it has treated me great and it cost me $300 and taught me how to do a re-wrap job on my own. I dig MIJ drums for certain applications. I have a big old WFL 26 inch bass with calf heads that I love to use as a woofer in the studio. My 7x14 Radio King works for EVERYTHING!

In terms of new stuff? I think the Tama Birch/Bubinga kits are amazing. Best kits for the bucks out there (in my opinon). I really dig Yamaha absolute stuff. I also think that for the money, the Gretsch Reknown series are great. I would love to hear one of the new USA Gretsch kits...even though I think the prices they charge for them are a little insane. I am endorsed by this small company out of Detroit MI called Detroit Custom Drum Co. Sam makes fantastic drums. I used a 6x14 Spalted Myrtle drum on a session earlier this year that he built and it was just what the doc ordered. He is currently building me a Keller Vintage Mahogany shell drum that I will leave as a mystery. I am stoked to hear it. I also really wanna check out one of those DW Solid Shell snares. Can you believe it??? DW!!!! I hear these snares sound fantastic!

My point however is that this isn't about what I think sounds good or bad. Who cares what I think? It is super frustrating that I always get drawn into this crap about DW out of one little light hearted jab.....and believe me I have learned my lesson. Never again. All that ever happens is a few dudes come in and start dadding me about how closed minded I am and how many vintage drums they have and how they know what good sound is blah blah.

I was just trying to make the point that showing a clip of a dude playing a DW kit in a music video is in no way evidence that the drums being shown are tonally worth more or less than any other kit. There isn't even proof that he played the stupid drums on the recording! And anyway...maybe he did. Maybe I am a total idiot and my OPINION is actually wrong somehow. Even then I really dont care. In fact I am feeling bad about even wasting my time typing this out.

Done now. Seriously won't comment again on this topic.

Appears, like me, that your coolness factor spreads a wide range.

I would imagine all those drums sound great from the throne, and then sound different from 10 feet away in front, and then sound like "whatever" when recorded.

I was listening to some raw "unreleased" Steely Dan the other day..... lots of the sessions I liked better than the released versions. Less polished and "real" to my ears.........

Adam, since it's me this seems to be directed at, I'll respond, 1st off you respond to my jab, that is from an old thread, you can find it about I hate DW'S! I don't know if your on that thread and I don't care, also on black hole sun cameron did use a dw kit to record it an a kleppinger snare drum! and in fact most recording are done with a vintage kit, and I have No bias towards any manfacture .I like drums period, you seemed to miss that, it seem you do have a bias toward certain drums, I don't that was And is my point aboutit< I own all vintage brands which means I like drums there are brands that aren't my cup of tea! my post where I say And Dws blah blah blah this is a joking jab at the thread I just mentioned, believe me I know what a professional studio can do with any drum sound,Are we through with this now!

Its cool VM. No worries.

Lets be buddies and talk only about the positive from here on out. These arguments are so worthless anyway. I always hate myself for even getting involved because I know it is just a waste of time and only negative feelings come out of it. It always starts as a jab and then people feel the need to defend themselves etc etc and the argument gets way out of control. Lets just not do it anymore eh? This forum is a great place for us to talk about the things we love (drums) not a place to argue over such silliness.

Right?
