You know we all do a lot of work on our drums but as I was working on this WFL kit I came across something in my mind. What I'm doing to this kit is a preservation, not a restoration. Some of my work on snares and kits have been full blown restorations, and some have been preservations. Do you guys think we should qualify the two?

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

Yes. I honestly do. I've done some good preservation and restoration and I've done harm. I'm human and I'm learning. There is a distinct difference in preserving and restoring. I would have argued that point two years ago. But, guys like O-Lugs and VM2K and our esteemed overseers have taught me different. Very good point that should be fleshed out.

Mcjnic, thank you for the kind words, we are only renting these old drums you don't own them, someone owned them before you someone will own them after you! if you are a real vintage drum guy it's your duty to preserve what can be preserved!! certainly there is a time when other measures must be pursued!! as I have stated many times before, Us old Not So Modern Drummer Guy's, never used the term Orphans, we called them singles< to re-wrap a perfectly good drum just because it doesn't match what you have, is absolutely criminal! trade it sell it to someone because out there someone is looking for that very drum! this is the electronic age, and there are many avenues one can use to find what your looking for, If the wrap is destroyed then yes re-wrap it! and these old tubs are starting to break down and necessary work correctly should be performed to bring them back up to spec! great great thread, thanks for starting it!D' Drummer

I agree, and to me restoration is in the realm of preservation. It seems when you preserve the original integrity, or restore and then maintain the original integrity it is preservation. I feel you probably don’t have to qualify the two.

Mummification is preservation too! Laughing H

Think of it as Conservatorship.

From the Wikipedia definition of Conservator (Museum)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservator_(museum)

A conservator is a professional who works on the conservation of objects. Their work involves determining the structural stability of an object, addressing problems of chemical and physical deterioration, and performing corrective treatment based on an evaluation of the aesthetic, historic, and scientific characteristics of the object.

Conservation professionals bring practical experience, a broad range of theoretical and scientific knowledge, and a commitment to high standards and performance to bear on their work.

This sounds like "US."

From vintagemore2000

to re-wrap a perfectly good drum just because it doesn't match what you have, is absolutely criminal!

Just to play Devil's advocate - methinks this point is very debatable really. Example - you have 2 pcs of a vintage bebop set and you are waiting - searching - waiting - searching for that elusive 14x14 or 14x18 to come along - and it does (close enuff era &\or serial #'s not too far off). But of course it's not the same finish ! Ssssoooooo - is it really criminal to rewrap THAT drum ? I would argue that it's the very opposite of criminal:2Cents:

Jaye, what if I was looking for that very drum that was original, it will never be original but once, and now you altered it, any re-wrap devalues it period!! that's when you get a keller vintage shell, you would not know the difference!!
