Another MIJ Unicorn...I mean snare.

Loading...

So this little guy is from the proceeds of my sale of the Acrolite. A 5 ply shell with reinforcing rings, Star Breadloaf lugs and Sticksaver hoops. The strainer is gone, so it is getting a Pearl P-85 style. It also had a hideous red sparkle, very strange wrap. This looked like a silver that had been overlaid, but turned out to be multi-layer of base silver glitter, and then a red clear coat over that. It was pretty messed up, so I stripped it in favor of the remaining slice of Curly Maple. I know, I know, I said earlier it is a BE maple, but you know what, I'm getting old, and my brain is like a seive...Anyway, see the pix for the beginnings of the next train wreck...

Hey Jonni,

We'll forgive your brain. Keep us posted with the pics. How many MIJ snares does this make now in your collection if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers

Well, as for a year, it has to be a transition year in the later days. It is a strange shell, not like the 6 or 9 ply at all because it has rings. It has no badge, and the grommet was not really tight in the vent hole, so it came out easily and will go right back.

.................Look at this, the Emperors new clothes...:

Well, I am only going to use Titebond II for this one. The Pros would say to use a high quality contact cement, but my skillz ain't that good....In this picture, it is only clamped on for show. For the spead, it will be done with a cheesy roller I got from Lowe's, it is for wallpaper, very smooth, soft rubber roller pad. To hold it on the shell, I am going to use simple ratchet straps, cargo type straps, Probably use 2 and then I can concetrate all the clamps to the edges. I will have to pick up another dozen or three, but those little buggers are super cheap at Harbor Freight Tools, which is a mile and a half down the road. Since it is obvious I don't have all the wood shop tools any good woodworker should have, I will have to take it to a friends to clean it up around the edges once complete.

After all the drying time of about a day, it will get a few coats of lacquer. The lacquer will contain some light stain to give it a warm caramel color. Video tutorial say you?

"Progress is mine!" sayeth the lunatic.....

So far, so good. Will be a couple of hours before the straps come off. Maybe in the morning I'll pull them and see how bad it looks. Turns out there was some damage to the veneer that caused me to have to trim it. Now there will be a "patch piece" in the back, away from prying eyes, but still there, about 3 "...damn.

Some tools and my new favorite replacementr strainer. I put this one on my WMP Apollo and found out through use and close inspection etc. that this is an amazingly well built strainer. Very well built, heavy, precise and just overall better than even the P85. I know many people dislike the p-85, and others will hate me because it is a MIJ piece, but the truth is, this one one fine unit. Heavily chromed, and comes with butt end, all for 20-ish at GC, the Evil Empire, the Mal-Mart of music...anyway did I mention how nice this thing works? Smooth as butter, just so cool. Now, if it didn't have the logo on there it would be even nicer. Did I mention it works great? Tom asked about the roller I use, so here it is, from Lowe's, about 5 bucks in the wallpaper aisle. Did I mention how much I like the new strainer yet?
