Ludwig Black Panther

From poppy79424

I used to use my formal dining room exclusively for restoring and working on drums, but since I remodeled my home I have all my tools and chemicals, parts etc... out in the garage. I took the two leaves out of the dining room table so the worthless fancy chairs can sit around it

I found this quite humorous...I'm not happy unless I have a stripped down snare drum (or even bass drum) scattered all over the dining room table. Add in the constant remodeling and my home looks like a job site sometimes. Drives the old lady crazy!flowers2

Thats funny that you said that. I had guitars and drums scattered all over my livin room and was restoring drums In my formal dining room on that very big dining table that I only use once a yr. Well Christmas was coming, so i had to get all that stuff out of my livin and dining rooms. I decided to Fix up a bedroom to put all my musical instruments in. Long story short. I put wood flooring in 3 bedrooms, hall, and living room and repainted everything too. I finally got through christmas and now the drums are starting to pile up again!

Thats why I took a leave of absence from here for a few months!

I have had some interest in my BP snare replica, sooooooo

I think I need to wrap another snare or re wrap this one for the forum.

I didnt document the snare wrap job. Sorry boys,

I'm planning a reenactment with pics and explanation.

I will also show comparisons of different versions of the Corinthian vinyl used, and why i picked this one. If I was as creative as john I'd video it.

That Accent snare you rewrapped did look great. How do those 'budget' snares actually sound?

I bought a buffing, polishing wheel at lowes yesterday and put it on my grinder., I bought some fine polishing compound and experimented on a old sonor pedal. I couldnt believe the results! The aluminum was all dull and the side I polished looks like chrome now! I polished a Luddy largr classic lug and it turned out fabulous!!

From Drumjinx

For those who do a lot of lug polishing by hand, here is a the way I have been polishing lugs for the past few years. It is so much faster and very effective. I can polish 30 lugs in 25 minutes or less. The pumice I use will not scratch the chrome at all. I used a test lug when I first started doing this and tried to damage the lug...but could not. A lathe similar to this one (which is a Dental lathe) can bought at Harbor freight at a fairly good price. I think they also sell the rag wheels. The pumice is very cheap and can be bought on ebay.BTW....the Black Panther kit is looking great!http://www.youtube.com/user/drumsjinx#p/u/9/2HGOAbBVgrIhttp://www.youtube.com/user/drumsjinx#p/u/8/PNtYRud0Spg

Here is a PREMIER kit I just picked up on eBAy. Looks like a home spun rewrap job in black vinyl. Is this close to the same as ludwig black panther? Bought these as a practice set and now really liking this black vinyl look. What they did was wrap right over the existing electric blue and left the hoops alone. I bought some sample material at the upholstery shop and now working on a small set of concert toms so I will post those in a couple days. Pics not working right now...
Ok Y'all I got my cheap ludwig CS Accent 6X14 8 bowtie lug snare and my Black Panther matching vinyl. I stained the inside of the snare shell and put a few coats of clear, and I wraped the snare, got it all back together and It looks pretty good. I replaced the snare throw and butt plate with a P85, I replaced the lug screws with vintage ones. This snare certainly isnt, and Im not trying to pass it off as original. I just did this to display it in my drum room. Just for aesthetic reasons. here it is:
Hey Poppy! When you did this process, did you glue the vinyl directly to the wood shell, or to the existing wrap? Also, what's the easiest way to acquire this exact product? through Ford? I've decided to do the whole double bass practice/show kit so need a few pointers before I dive in. Also, can you describe the actual BP wrap? Is it vinyl over mylar , or what? I haven't owned a BP drum as of yet so I'm somewhat clueless, but finding more & more reasons I like this finish, esp the resilliance for restoration !

The CS Accent drum I used on mine had the original wrap on like the hi bond tape method and it came right off. I still have the wrap in case i ever wanna put it back. I sewed the vinyl together to make sort of a sleeve. I made it a very tight and had to stretch it to slide it over the shell. Then I folded 1//2 of it down and glued it with weldwood flamable contact adhesive. Rolled it back down and stuck it. Then rolled the other side down and glued it and rolled it back and stuck it. You'll have to get your vinyl from an upholstery shop. There are many remakes of the oriiginal vinyl, but the remake isnt as close as the original ford vinyl. I got mine from a supplier that has the original, but its like 40-50 a yard. The place I got mine is SMS Fabrics. The remake should be about $19.95 a yard. Ealry 80's corinthian vinyl...
