Question about quality of vintage hardware
I too use a rogers Hi Hat and only a rogers hi hat and also speed king pedals, i also think the roger cymbal tilters are the very best ever made...
The Rogers tilters were cool.
My favorite is old stands that have no tilter where you just bend the top of the rod in a vise. I love the look, the weight and the way it's always the same.
Congrats on the new vintage kit. May it be a source of joy to you!
Just wanted to make you aware of Gibraltar's fabulous 8600 series vintage set of hardware with flat base stands. The set comes with two cymabl stands, hi-hat, snare stand and bass pedal. It look awesome with any vintage kit, esp jazz or club-date styles and sizes. Here's the link;

The main improvement over the years to drum equipment has been with hardware. Nothing wrong with the vintage hardware but upon close inspection and use (excepting Rogers swiv-o-matic hardware) there have been vast improvements in design, function, and esthetics. Shells for the most part, were not improved upon upon by any degree.
Did a debate just start?
Enjoy!

There are people who insist that a new Camry looks better than a '56 T-Bird.
People say the same thing about my old '60s vespas and lambrettas - "why don't you just get a new 500cc motorcycle?" ... because that's not the bloody point, right?
I've had a few vintage Vespas (Sprint, Primavera, now an ET3) and the old arguments you hear never change.
When dealing with original classic designs, there's no accounting for taste. What some people consider inconveniences and flaws, I consider charm and authenticity.
If it worked then, with maintenance, there's no reason to embrace double braced, heavy duty, automatic transmission new stuff...

Maybe... but a Ferrari F430 Spider will eat that T-bird and spit out nothing but singed feathers. How about a Porsche Carrera GT? It's not just about looks, either of those two cars looks fantastic and is. (GT40 is no slug either?)
Yeah I have to agree about the jelly bean cars. Boring upon boring and even the colors are boring. What can ever compete with a robins egg blue T-bird or a Flamingo pink? 57 Chevy convertible Sun Gold. Cars had class and style in the 50s.
But I'll tell you, flat base stands are vintage because functionally they take up floor space and are hard to fit around a kit. Better high-hats were designed, because there was a need, not because they looked pretty.
Function over form if someone is playing those drums. But with collecting, the accurate matching hardware gets my vote for style and period authenticity.
Each has it's own place. Neither is right or wrong.
Since someone mentioned it. 100% Speed King forever, wouldn't play anything else.
PICTURES PLEASE!
That's the only way we will be able to get to the bottom of this whole thing.
My drums certainly look like that… except my floor tom has the normal bent-legs we expect on a floor tom, and not these straight ones. *edit* Actually, as i look at this, the little bracket that the rack tom mounts to is different on mine. It's tubular shaped...curved... mounts with 2 holes... and then there's a clamp-sorta bracket that bolts to that, and the tom mounts to that.

I took a complete set of flat base vintage Ludwig stuff to my gig this last week. It worked flawlessly. But, again, my application was acoustic jazz -not death metal.
As far as the car analogies go, I see it like this...
A Ferrari can go faster than a Corvette in a road race....but how many people can apply the power of a Ferrari on a day-to-day basis? I certainly can't! So, even though a Ferrari is built for speed, I can only appreciate it for it's looks. I couldn't even handle a car on a track going 200 mph.
Give me a Stingray, a good friend and a nice sunny day and all the Ferraris in the world can pass me by all they want! Give me a vintage set of Ludwigs, a good bass player and a cool venue and I'm good to go!Car Driving2

Is that a double bass set up?
