someone told me the ply on these was maple, poplar, mahogany ...but i seriously have no idea.
I bet they sound great!! That's a great combination of wood!!!
Harry
I would bet that they are mahogany, poplar, mahogany.
it’s quite interesting, this discussion seems to come up quite often, and as kellyj said will usually turn into a debate.
Vintage hardware will suffice if cared for properly, the only areas that I have personally found it does not work for me are positioning and sometimes performance. The stands can be difficult to get just right sometimes. Unfortunately I moved away from the Ludwig speed king because I found the same problem Bonham did - the squeaking got into the mics in the studio.
I don’t suffer any incremental attachment to having a period correct kit as im playing it not looking at it but I can see why for some dudes that can be an issue.
Truth is there is no right answer just everybody’s preference
The only vintage hardware that will suffice for me is Rogers memriloc or perhaps 1978 tama titan.
My 1976 vistalite's tom holder is unacceptable. It has to be tightened with a wrench (I'd have to modify with wingnuts) and the wimpy little l-arms do not hold toms in place. Additionally, the tom holder has a tendency to rotate on the kick drum.
I replaced my holder with pearl optimounts. I could care less if it's not vintage (I retained the original in my closet/parts bin.) it's so much better in every way, it's unreal.

If you look at this pic, it is kind of funny. My band opened for The Brian Setzer Orchestra this past winter. I chose take my newer Ludwig Drums and I used my vintage Camco flat base hardware (pedal too)!
I love the vintage stands!! They look great....even with a newer kit!
For bigger venues...I continue to use my Camco stands and pedal, but for small bars, etc..I am starting to use vintage Ludwig stands. The reason being is that the Camco stands are more dificult to find and tend to go for more money on ebay. In a large venue I'm not worried about the guitar player or bass player knocking over a stand (it has happened), etc...so I don't have to worry about them. The small bars they tend to get bumped around by other band mates and passers by, so I have started using the Ludwig which are more common and easier to find parts for.
I started with a 63 slingy set and I used a complete set of vintage Slingy hardware. Nice hardware. Never had a problem. The vintage hardware is alot tuffer then it looks. Even when the hi-hat stand is swaying a bit when your playing hard on it, I wouldn't ever go with newer hardware.
But again, that is my personal prefrence. Some may argue that newer is better. Its whatever you like. :)
