Well, my wife just reluctantly allowed me to measure her to where the cymbals appear to reach the gentlemen in the picture. She is 5' 8" and based on what I measured on her, those cymbals are between 22" - 24". Now, I don't believe the gentlemen pictured to be 5' 8" tall given the pictures of them in relation to the door and the chair so I will take a stab here, Drumaholic, and say those cymbals are no more than 22". I'm not sure myself, but I think they look like 22". For 1940 that's extremely large. Nothing that large shows up in the 1940 catalogue, not even 20". These might have been custom ordered for some symphonic player.

A couple of additional facts about Zildjian:

The Azco plant was producing K's for the Zildjian Company before the split.

The name, Sabian, comes from the names of Bob Zildjian's family..........Sally, Andy and Bob--with the "ian" from the surname.

aaaaaah. I see now. I had no idea that 22" was huge for that period. So I will now agree that, given this latest little lesson, those cymbals are huge in that picture!!!

That makes 2 strikes against wikimedia now. That should tell you something.

I agree totally. I set my buddy up on a twenty dollar bet on one of those "expert sites". We were arguing over race horses and I went in and actually changed the results of a race from a couple years ago, started the arguement with him, made the bet and then busted out the clincher; "Let's look it up then!!"

You have commented on this before and I agree 100 percent. Take anything you get from those sites with a double dose of grains of salt as anybody can change the information without any shred of credentials.

I was repeating what Andy Zildjian told me back in the early days of the company when I asked him about the origin of the name. I just figured the Armenian name ending was to add additional credibility to the then new company.

At one time, the retailer I worked for sold more Sabian than all other brands.

Alejian, Zenjian, Zinjian, Kashian, Benjian, Denjian,.....they were all looking for that Armenian sounding name for some street-cred:

Interesting. I was a Sabian endorser and Bill explained to me that it was the first two letters of their names.

My guesstimate is 24-26 inches for this pair. There is distortion from the lens.

Or if those are 9" courses... 27 inches. LoLoLoLo
