What are the tonal differences between Ludwig & Rogers?

Loading...

Should I really expect a tonal difference between them, or the choice will probably be just about the look and condition?

Also, I noticed on the Duco the lugs on the floor tom are different than the ones on the rack and kick. Is is possible the kit was like that originally or it's different kits put together?

And no snare in the deal, but the guy also have a few snares to sell, will maybe be tempted depending of the price.

Same for me. Is that a wood dynasonic?

It certainly appears that way to my eye!

Yes, it's a wood-shell Dynasonic! I wonder if it comes with the kit, though. If it does, then that's the set to buy!

It's VERY likely that the floor tom was added later to the Duco kit.

Too bad about the Rogers snare not being included. That would easily pay for all the other drums and then some! IF you get the opportunity to buy that snare, then I HIGHLY recommend that you buy it.

I stand by my earlier decision. The 13/16/22 was usually called a Super Classic. But the bass drum has a double tom holder on it, so it was likely reduced from a larger configuration. They probably all sound good and without the snare drums included it is kind of a crap shoot as to which one would be the "best" for your application. Only you can pick up the vibe from the kits! Good luck!

I certainly don't disagree with any of the opinions here but as an owner of a couple of Ludwig kits and a Rogers, for the three drums I would go for the Rogers. They were so well built and have an amazing sound. But sit behind them all and pick the feel that connects with you. You really can't go wrong with any of these options. Let us know what you end up with.

I would go with the Rogers even without the snare drum.

Thank you!

I hear you on the rogers snare, but the guy seem to be a collector so he knows the value, maybe he'll agree on selling it to me, but I'm sure it worth a lot of dough... Initially, I didn't want to put more than 350-400 $cad on a snare...

I kinda like the idea of getting an "underdog" rogers instead of the "established" ludwid, plus I prefer Rogers's tom holders and hardware, but for a low tuning, like the first ludwig in this video, can I get a sound as much fatty as that with a Rogers?

Probably some of you think "goddam, just go and try them!", well, that's my plan but the guy isnt available til next weekend !

The Rogers would probably be a solid choice. One of the reasons I chose the 70's Ludwig kit was that, IF you ever needed any spare parts, then you'd likely have more luck finding the exact things you might need since there were a lot more Ludwigs than there were Rogers. Plus, Ludwig and Gretsch are really the only former "Big Four" American drum companies left!

The Rogers kit might present you with more problems in that regard. Also, I know that the Rogers Swivomatic collets were either machined or die-cast. The machined ones were the stronger and more preferable versions. I'll leave it to a Rogers expert to say whether or not that particular Rogers you're looking at has machined or die-cast collets. If it turns out that any of the Rogers collets are cracked or broken, then you might have a bit of a time locating replacements....and when (if) you find them, they won't be cheap. Just some food for thought. Actually, I've always preferred Rogers Swivomatc drums, too. They really are cool!

I hope you find the kit that calls to you when you do get a chance to check them out in-person. Keep us posted!

As others have said, factors like drum heads, sticks and room acoustics can all determine the sound of any drumset.

Play all the sets and trust your gut instinct when it comes to selecting a set to buy. Asking drummers here which set you should purchase will get you multiple answers, and they are usually based upon the person's personal preference, which isn't relevant to you.

However, vintage Rogers wood Dynasonic snare drums are rare and very pricey, as the vast majority of them were made of metal. If that red sparkle Rogers snare is, in fact, a vintage Dynasonic, I would snap it up in a heartbeat, if the price is right. I can't tell from the photo you provided. Wood Rogers Powertone snare are also desirable, but they go for less money than a Dynasonic.

All the sets you are considering are viable candidates. As I said, trust your gut.

Thanks you all, you guys are really helpful and passionate !

O-Lugs: good point about the collets. But are the collets only for mounting the rack tom or are they used in the drum for some other uses I can't think of?
