Ludwig Question What To Do?

Hello, all got a question for you all Today I went to look at a 1969 Keystone badges Ludwig 5piece set. The wrap is Black Panther drums are a 12,13,16,22 COB snare all stands and Zildjian cymbals. Price is alittle on the high side

But I know that Ludwig covered over the citrus mod finish.

So my question is should I buy it and see what finish is under the black panther or get the set and leave it alone?

I might if I were you. VERY tempting whenever I see a Black Panther drum....I guess it depends on the price and how nice everything is (or isn't). If it isn't an overwrap, then you'll just have one big, ugly set of drums! j/k...I know some people love Black Panther wrap, too...just not me.

You can always take a peek and see without completely unwrapping the entire kit....but it might be a good idea to make some friends with people who love the BP finish -just in case!

I agree with O-Lugs on this. You should be able to tell if Citrus Mod is underneath by just removing some heads and looking down on the bearing edge. Should be able to see the wrap. Let us know!

Whoa! This is the first that I've ever heard of this! Please enlighten me on this. Was the Citrus Mod finish not a big seller? (John Densmore played a kit with this finish).

Why did Ludwig choose the Black Panther wrap to cover these drums?

About how many Citrus Mod drums were in inventory at the time the decision was made to cover them with BP?

Man, I learn something new (almost) every day on VDF!

Thanks, MB

Black Panther is a very thin wrap. When assembling BP sets Ludwig would grab previously wrapped,( in unsold finishes,) shells and install the BP wrap over them. Once in a while citrus mod, psych red, and other previously wrapped shells were used.

Thanks for that info, and the quick reply...and oops - I confused Mod Orange with Citrus Mod. Those type finishes were very interesting, but too "far out" for this traditionalist.

IAM on the fence on this one, IAM going to look and see the drums tomorrow in person. The price is alittle high for me,but the real problem is I like to keep drums as original as possible.

If I see the drums and see the citrus mod under the BP wrap the big question is what set would be the most value?

If I have to remove the BP the badges would have to removed this to me makes the drums not original. Ok IAM thinking out loud.

Will see tomorrow.

Which would be MORE original? The Black Panther over the Citrus Mod or the Citrus Mod under the Black Panther? Inquiring minds want to know.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
