Slingerland Marching Drum

From tubelugs

Any stamp inside the shell?

Hey Tubelugs - You were quoting Havard, but he was referring to my drum so I hope I'm not stepping on you here???

On my "Boy Scout" model there is no stamp inside.

Quoted post

There is an ink stamped M inside, that I understand indicates mahogany.

Now let me correct something from my first post on this thread:

It is my later model Slingland marching snare that has a M stamp inside the shell, not this "Boy Scout" model.

Thanks you guys!

Am I reading your post wrong or are you saying they offered two different strainers for this drum from 1934 through the early 40s?Thanks Havard!

Well, I'm by no means any expert on this, but both strainers existed in the thirties, no doubt about that. I have attached images from the 1936 and 1940 catalogue and you can see the two different strainers. The "Eagle emblem" on mine is listed as an option. There is no mention of the different strainers.

One possibility is that mine is a different model from yours. I went through the catalogues again and found out that the "Legion Heir" series was offered with or without "centre supports". All the pictures of these drums have the new strainer, so it might be that my drum actually is a "Legion Heir Parade Drum" without "Centre supports". One more thing to back this up is that mine have a "drum key" holder as well, which also matches the catalogue pictures.

Here's a quote from Rob Cooks Slingerland book about the strainer on your drum:

672 POST STRAINER

"....This strainer was sold on all parade drums in 1928. From 1934 on it was sold only on the lower-priced parade drums. This strainer was discontinued in the early '40's (wartime)"

Man this thread is really coming along great!!

Thanks so much to those who have shared so far.

That's what this deal is all about.

If anyone has some cat scans they could bring forth, that would be super, I'm sure the Webmaster would love to be able to post those along with other Slingerland info in the Drum Guide. Then it wold be there for all to benefit from.

Keep it coming, guys!!

Thanks!!

I'll crawl into my drum room and snap a pic or two of my marching snare. It's really cool. The wife and I are trying to figure out what we are going to do with it.

I have a ton of catalogs and can fill in all of the history on marching snares.

Here is the deal! When I started that snare page for Slingerland I excluded the marching snares... I know, but at the time not on the priority list of peopla doing research and as we all know they are not as collectible as "Normal" snare drums.

When I did the Ludwig Section I did add the marching snares and I would just need to re-visit the Slingerland Catalogs, I have about 20 -30.

When I first saw the post I was in the middle of another project. So the rest of this evening I will go to my Slingerland catalogs and update that page of the web site.

Made it to the room. Here's a few shots of the drum. It's a 15 incher. I still can't decide what to do with it. I'm thinking of using it as a cool tom on a Jazz kit or an aux tom on my Luddy gold sparkle.

So here is the Slingerland Snare Page.

Hard to stay focused! But I found the original Duplex After Beat catalog shot and I decided to do the Slingerland Kits from 1928.
