Would you trade?

I've been offered a trade, and I'm having trouble making a decision.

The offer: a college student has a 1974 red Ludwig Vistalite, 12/13/16/22 with snare, near mint condition. He wants to trade it for my DW Performance set, 8/10/13/14/16/22 without snare drum.

I'm tempted. The positive: condition, collectability and to be honest I lusted about a Vistalite set through jr high. The negative: it's not a tone I want for playing, and Arkansas isn't a good market for resale.

Would you do it?

Gretsch USA: 1958 3-ply (white pearl, 12/16/20), 1976 6-ply (12/13/16/22), 1998 6-ply (walnut, 8/10/12/14/16/20)
Slingerland: 1963 (BDP, 13/16/22), 1966 (Sparkle red, 13/16/20)

Also another negative: he lives a 4 hour drive away. I can't really see the drums unless it's an agreed-upon trade. I have good photos of them, but it's not the same as seeing them in person.

I agree with JR. Do it!

Although I've never lusted for Vistalites, I understand well your yearning for a specific vintage kit. I drove almost 5 hours each way - including from one end of LA to the other, and beyond...to buy the specific "Hollywood" kit that I so desperately wanted when I was in High School 53 years ago (but had no money then)....And although I hated that rush-hour drive thru LA again on my way home, I'm absolutely thrilled with the kit! ! ! !

You only live once - you gotta enjoy it!....Besides, you can always get another modern DW kit.

I'm sure the Vistalite guys can advise you on what to look for (cracks) on those drums, so you aren't disappointed. And I'm sure they can also tell you how to tone them down.

Red Vistalite is cool, but if this is to be your only kit, then you've answered your own question.

Keep in mind that most people here will default toward vintage, myself included. But if I'm trading for something, I need to go in with a low threshold of potential remorse.

[addendum] Upon further review, I see that you have other vintage drums. I still think the negatives outweigh the positives. Ultimately, only you know for sure, but if you were truly sure, you wouldn't be asking for advice.

Good luck as far as collecting red is hot

I can be impartial because I don't like DWs or Vistalites. Go with your gut. As others have stated, you can always buy another DW set. But, if the Vstalites are in top collectors' shape, Do it.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
