I have an opportunity to buy a late 1960s Ludwig drum set. Beautiful wrap, very well kept. 8/10 or better condition. 12/13/16/22 set and the owner is willing to add a 1970s Acrolite snare for a smidgen more money.

The problem? Somebody removed the Ludwig badges. I could buy it, look around Reverb and eBay for badges, but finding the right serial numbers make this a difficult proposition.

And to be honest, the reason I was looking at this set was to keep it as a collectable. My 71 Ludwig has the same general tone, so this other set wouldn't add anything new to my collection. I feel the missing badges are a big negative.

What would you do? Would you buy it?

No, I had a beautiful 71 black panther kit a few years ago 12,13,16,22, virgin bass, wrap was perfect except a small scuff on the floor tom, everything was excellent, clear interiors very nice edges. The badges were early without serial numbers but the original owner scribed his sin number on all badges, it always bothered me and I sold them.

They would never be more than a player's kit to a collector

I’d pass on that kit.

Nope, pass on it based on what you mentioned. You can find what you want and it will retain value. Good luck.

A pox upon the person who removed the badges. That person probably made a good deal of money by selling them to some Ludwig nut who wanted a "collectible" drum set. I think that this cannibalism reduced the value of the drum set by at least one third.

As everyone else has suggested, my vote is to pass on this. You made it clear that you want these drums as a "collectible" kit. The badges are gone, so it's no longer collectible. For an excellent players kit, they'd be fine as-is...and you could install some aftermarket badges...which come without serial numbers.

Example. I recently purchased a 1965 Slingerland Modern Solo set. The wrap on all the shells is bad. Since I plan to keep the set...and not concerned with resale value...I'm going to re-wrap them.

Good for you, Mark. Are you going to use a wrap that was available in 1965 or have some fun with a new wrap that appeals to you?

Thank you everybody!

I passed on the Ludwig set last night, and two hours later I found a near mint 1960s Gretsch set! Burgundy sparkle, Jasper shells. Guess where the money went? ;)
