Or in the bid retraction strategery ;) ....is if an item is at say 349...you put 1000 in and it raises the current bid a small amount above the previous high bid.

Then you retract that bid now knowing where the high bidder is at. Watch to see if no other bids are placed, and if there isn't, bid over (now knowing his top limit) by 10 bucks in the remaining moments .

It rarely works some unknown always comes in at the end and outbids everybody lol..

But you can check another's maximum bid..while the auction is in progress..lol

I consider that to be a serious breach of auction protocol.

Back when reserve auctions were more popular I occasionally would get a bidder that would bid upwards until he found out where the reserve was at and then retract. Maybe they thought of themselves as clever. But anybody I caught doing that was immediately notified that they were just added to my "blocked bidders list"; and those that did are all still on there to this very day.

Yeah that sounds about right. It might just make it to $1200 if there's a little fight between bidders over it at the end.

When was the last time that you saw a reserve price auction? It's know it's been quite a while since I have.

I think what happened in the case of that 18" old stamp is simply that as bidders became aware of that sound example and listened to it, they came to the realization that this cymbal wasn't everything that they had expected or wanted. Unfortunately this seller cut his own throat by posting that. Had he not done so it would that cymbal would likely have sold for at least $400 more than it did. It was good sounding but usable only as a crash. It was unsuitable as a ride, so in a sense is was only 1/2 the cymbal it should have been. Therefore is was completely appropriate when 1/2 of the bidders bailed out of the auction and it consequently sold for 1/2 the of predicted price.

Reminds me of a song by Stone Temple Pilots.
