Old K Alert...Old K Alert.. Man your stations man your stations...

From Drumaholic

And this is a good object lesson ... Zildjian can't even come close to the original... That K. has all the character of a very fine quality old Scotch (single malt). You can savor it's subtley and smoothness, and it goes down with just a touch of oak-like aromaticity...but followed by that that A....it's roughly like taking a swig of Southern Comfort. You just want to spit it out onto floor. It's not even in the same league as the K.

Love it.

Istanbul K Zildjian Paper Thin Cymbal IIIb IIIc Signed & Label 18” Ride Crash

It's a thin weight and might be a nice one. And no "buy it now" either; it's "man style".

the washington k doesnt sound to me like the greatest k ever to be honest, and my feeling is it's maybe worth remembering that mel lewis gave it to him---let him have it rather than keeping it for himself. the zildjian replica of that sounds better to me than their crappy commercial replica of philly joe's beautiful old k, that looks and sounds like it's been hammered by some horrendous old machine of torture. did they even bother to hammer the bell ?? you can see mr riley braced for the full embarrassment of his predicament..,.,.,.,.

In fact you're correct. It's hammered with a computer controlled automaton that utilizes a pre-selected hammering pattern applied via a servo controlled pile driver hammer.

In other words it's the high tech equivalent of what amounts to a medieval torture device for cymbals. And that's the very thing needed to replicate what used to be done by a highly skilled artisan with only his hands, muscle power, and brain. But that was the in the old days.

But this is now. Zildjian's modern-era process produces a cymbal that's so much better than that. And if you don't believe it you can just ask Zildjian's resident dweeb, Paul Francis. He knows everything.

And while we're still on the subject of the 18" old stamp, here's another one for you to ponder:
