So you have some opinions on drums, drumming, drummers and cymbals that might go against the grain, so you never posted them. Well, here's your chance!I'll start -Ringo Starr, I don't get the hypeIn the end, sticks are sticks17" hi hats are just stupidYour turn!
If you don't get Ringo, Jim, you don't understand what makes a great drummer.
Ringo is the greatest rock drummer who ever lived, because:
He played/plays great time. He's like a clock. George Martin was able to splice together lots and lots of takes, because Ringo's time was spot on all the time.
He had a great feel for every song The Beatles gave him. His playing has a swing to it.
He played what was ideal to make each song work.
He influenced perhaps millions of kids to pick up drumsticks and sold more Ludwig drums than any salesman who ever worked for the company.
He played drums in the greatest rock band of all time. And how do I know all this? I wrote the book, that's how.
Exactly DrumBob!
Let me add this, Paul McCartney said they became The Beatles when Ringo joined the band. None of the Beatles would be considered virtuosos at their instrument, but what they did together made them the best of the best. There will never be another John, Paul, George and Ringo.
Double bass or kick pedals.
Stick twirling.
Pre-muffled drum heads.
Long a$$ bass drums.
The World could do great without
Trashy Cymbals full of holes
'Piggy back Cymbals'
so called 'Gospel Drumming' (ridiculous double forte overplaying, mostly linear)
that ugly bulky '90s Rims System
Cymbal Stand mounted 14" or even 16" Toms
Extra heavy Hardware
Zildjian Z Series!
Cranked up dead Snares that just go: CRACK! (resulting in YT comments like 'Dat Snare'...)
Producers cutting whole good Drum Takes into tiny Pieces, editing to death, quantisizing every bit and over compressing til there's no Life left. Happended to me and because of Hard Disk recording THEY CAN.DOH
Drummers who can't really shuffle
People who call a Bass a 'Base' Drum
Debates about who is the "best". (there's only one Best and that's Pete) Party

Well the title of the thread is, " unpopular opinions"! Guess I found one!Yes Sir
I didn't say I disliked him, I just can't go over the top for him. He never did anything that made me say wow. But then again, I never listened to the Beatles for the technical expertise. It was their music and songs that caught me. And I think they were all over the map on styles, so you can't really call them strictly a rock band. When I think of great rock drummers, I think of Ian Paice from Deep Purple. Guess I'll have to buy your book Bob!:D
johnnyringo, hard to believe that got a rise out of you!Laughing H
Sorry, Jim. You just don't get it. I'm really surprised. I'd recommend you go back and really listen to those old Beatles records and pay attention to Ringo and what he did for those songs.

Hey, I started out with Z series cymbals, and now I have some trashy cymbals full of holes...DOH
And yes, arguing over who is the best normally leads to pointless arguments that lead nowhere. It's all just opinion...

Listen to the drum fill after John, Paul and George sing "If there's anything I can do" in falsetto, pretty tricky lick with both hands playing the same pattern.
