My first set was Slingerland with a Ludwig Supra 400 snare. My teacher, who sold me the set, told me, "I'm out of Slingerland snares. The Ludwig is a better drum anyway." I didn't care and still don't. I'll use my Capri Pearl Slingerland snare with the Red Tiger set, or any of them. It doesn't matter.
What I won't do is mix different finishes together on bass drums and toms. That's not going to happen. No jelly bean sets for me. I'm slightly OCD on this stuff, I guess.
For playing, no. For DISplaying, yes.
Example: I have a red sparkle Downbeat kit with a red sparkle Downbeat snare...I love the bass drum and toms, but I never liked the Downbeat snare to play. It's so shallow, I get weird response from the heads unless I play it very softly. But, it's the right snare drum for that set, so that's the way it gets displayed. But I'd opt for a Supra or an Acrolite for playing on a gig ir recording session.
I've been looking to pick-up a red sparkle piccolo snare drum to match my kit, but I'll be darned if I can find any. I don't think they even exist, so if I go through with one, it won't match. Wish it would, but there are worse things.
Hmmmm...You could make one that matches. Just buy some red sparkle wrap for $50 max and voilà. But you have to find a snare that sounds like what you want and secondly, you have to want to alter that snare by wrapping it.

Well, I bought a steel Yamaha piccolo, and honestly, it looks great. I polished it up nicely and I like the look, and the sound is just awesome as well.
So I'll leave it as is, but thanks!
