A lot of players are very much into the appearance of their kits one way or another. Is it important for YOU to play with a matching snare drum to your kit[s]?
Does it have to match?
No, The right sounding drum matters to me more.
.....76/#XK9207 Phonic Sound Machine D454/D-505 snares !i
I agree with vintagemore2000, the sound does matter the most.
However, if the wrap or finish is rare or just "cool", I do think a matching snare is better.
For Sound reasons, continuity across the entire set; matching Brand: Yes
especially Hoops in the "hoop" department..Same hoops all thruout set..
that's what makes it "one" cohesive-feeling- set.
Looks /matching looks /pearl/wood finish/ are subjective/cosmetic
It goes/goes deeper/ than looks.

When they first started coming out with the metal snares everyone went that direction. As a collector I myself like the look of a complete matching kit however as a player it really is based on the sound
Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata
70's Ludwig BOP "Ringo" Kit
A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle
63 Walberg & Auge Sea Blue Agave Green Pearl
66 Leedy Shelly Manne Blue Agate Pearl
Ditto with mark !
as with my other kits, sure I have had matching snare’s and some some were great , others sound stifled my go to snare is my 61 cob and second is my 67 supra
Then the jazz fest are boxy they are for brush work etc
But my downbeat holds a real close go to in my arsenal as it has a sweet spot ,
While others I had in down beats or pioneers for that matter sounded like shat lol
It’s really luck of the draw that day they were made in quality control bearing edges etc
Can’t go wrong with brassy....but some matching snares are great sounding drums. Pick of the litters lol

1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
My snare never matches my kit, wrap-wise. I bought a silver sparkle snare to match my silver sparkle kit, but the silver sparkle snare better matches, tonally, the gold sparkle kit. Go figure...
1965 Ludwig Hollywood
1970 Ludwig Jazzette
I've been looking to pick-up a red sparkle piccolo snare drum to match my kit, but I'll be darned if I can find any. I don't think they even exist, so if I go through with one, it won't match.
Wish it would, but there are worse things.
