I have the '71 Ludwig and '63 Slingerland sharing a room now, and I'm collecting more hardware for the Ludwig, rather than poach hardware off the Slingerland.

To start, VintageDrumBug also had a 70s Ludwig Atlas stand so I bought it when I bought the set. I don't like putting the weight of the toms on my bass, and the 70s Atlas and Hercules stands used the same 1" diameter as the tom mount. So voila, I have my toms off the bass, and a cymbal mount for my Z-bell.

I found a 70s Hercules snare stand at a local pawn shop. Yes, that's a DW snare on the set (for now, anyway.) I like wood snares over metal, but I'm considering an Acrolite or Supraphonic.

The rest of hardware though, is current generation Ludwig Atlas. And I have to admit, Ludwig hardware is better than I expected. I bought the "standard" hi-hat stand and boom cymbal stand, and the "pro" Atlas pedal, and I'm very pleased! They're easily as good as the DW hardware I use on my other sets.

The bass drum head is from vintagelogos.com. The cat logo is probably silly for a man in his 50s, but my granddaughter thinks it's cute.

Now I need vintage Zildjian cymbals... and the search continues!

Nice. I love that setup, 2 toms on a stand to the left of the kick, probably because of Phil Collins' setup for The Lamb tour, before the Premiere kit. Happy cymbal hunting.

Very cool Warren- that's how I've been setting up lately/ although much flatter on the toms- 2 to the left gives me room for the hats and puts the ride right in the 'sweet spot'!

When I was in high school, I started out with the toms mounted on the bass drums (double bass.) But there was a local drum teacher who had toured in the jazz era. He was a firm believer in keeping the toms off the bass for tone and for long-term roundness of the bass. It made sense to me, so I moved to the setup above.

If you look at the video of the Chicago 1970 concert in Tanglewood, Danny Seraphine plays a very similar setup.

True, I angle more than normal. I play matched grip, and with my height, the extra angle is more comfortable to play.

Also, the pawn shop/garage sale crawl this weekend did not turn up any cymbals, but I did find a B/W badge Arcolite Galaxy finish. Sounds very good, even with the original heads still on it and the price ($50) made it worth the purchase!

Several years ago I acquired a Galaxy version B/W badge Acrolite snare drum for $50 just for the heck of it. I still prefer the sound of a wood shell snare drum to a metal snare drum. However, the Acro sounds very woody to me. it is my frequent go-to snare drum for my drum sets that do not have matching wood snare drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
