And you want to see prices go through the roof?Did you read my post about Scott Chinery? All it takes is for one doofus with a lot of money to buy that green Ludwig set for $15K or the champagne "Rodgers" set for $7K+ and then, the floodgates just might open for every delusional idiot out there who thinks that just because he has an old drumset, it's now worth a fortune. Ludwig and Rogers prices may go even higher than they are already, because ignorant sellers will see that and bump their prices up. It's already happened with Oyster Black Ringo kits to a certain extent.I'm trying to prevent this from happening.

You're trying to prevent that from happening? You possess that sort of power?

Have you ever thought that maybe some would like the prices to sky rocket, I'll bet the guys who collect drums would love to know their collection will be worth a huge amount if they left it for their children or grandchildren.

No, I alone don't possess the power to stop it, but the vintage drum community banded together could possibly prevent it by outing the sellers who are trying to drive prices up. Just say no to high prices.

You, JR, don't buy anything you can't get a deal on, right? You tell us about everything you buy and the prices paid. You want a good deal as much as the next guy, don't you? You do enough buying and selling to know what the values are, and that's good. I just wish all sellers had the same knowledge. They could get it here, if they made an effort, and we'd have more traffic on the site.

If you read my earlier post, you can see how one crazed rich guy drove up prices on vintage guitars. There has also been conspiracies among certain dealers, whose names I won't mention. Sometimes, price hikes are fueled by rumor and hearsay. Here's just one example.

Dealer A and Dealer B were talking on the phone about how they both had too many Fender Jaguars and Jazzmasters in stock. Nobody wanted them. They cooked up a plan to convince the guitar buying public that they were more valuable than they really were. They both suddenly jacked up the prices on all the Jaguars and Jazzmasters they had, making the guitar buying public think the guitars were more valuable and desirable than they really were. On top of that, their timing was good, because several well known alt rock guys started playing those guitars. Within a period of time, everyone was asking silly prices for Jaguars and Jazzmasters. And getting them. It was nothing more than an illegal practice called price fixing. They got away with it.

I'm not a rich guy. I can't spend $15K on a drumset, and I'd bet most of us here aren't rich guys either, but I've been intimately involved with the vintage guitar industry since the mid-1970's. I've seen what goes on. I want to try and keep the prices of vintage drums reasonable. That's all.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think this is the same thing, these are individual's, not companies with tons of gear to sell. I'm sure they're just trying to get as much as they can for one kit. Maybe they price it crazy high in hopes of getting a third of their asking price or maybe it's like the joke about the owner telling his wife he's trying to sell his gear, but he doesn't really want to sell it, so he ask for way more than it's worth.

It could be almost any reason why sellers ask so much, and we will never know why. It just disturbs me that it's happening. It scares me, frankly. I know there are still bargains out there, but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Are you keeping or selling those BDP Leedys? Just curious.

Yeah, maybe...but it's nobody else's business if it does/doesn't sell.

The whole point isn't that kit or any kit, in particular. It's a matter of who is in control of their own stuff. If anyone supports vigilantes banding together to patrol the world for people asking "too much" for their own stuff, then have fun. I'm not associating with any such thing.

And you bet I want prices to go up -into the stratosphere...as high and "ridiculous" as they can go. I applaud that concept. If I have to sell my drums to some "crazy rich Asian" country or to some sheik in the middle east, (or Mike Curotto!) ;) makes no difference to me. I'll get the price I want or I'll keep the drums, myself. And when I'm dead and gone one day, then it will be up to someone else to decide how they want to deal with them. But ain't NOBODY getting a bargain from me! I have a lot of love for my stuff and it's going to take a lot of money to get me to ever sell....a LOT of money. "Ohhhh it will be a cold day in Hell when O-Lugs gets anyone to make him an offer with that attitude!" Good. Bring a jacket then! :)

O-Lugs! I read your post above and certainly do agree with everything you say. My initial response to the Rogers kit was that there were so few pictures, many fuzzy, and no relevant information in the seller's post to validate the opening price. At least the seller of the green sparkle Bonham kit took the time to develop a detailed description of what he is offering. The seller of the "Rodgers" kit has repeatedly emailed me, most of which seems to be gibberish. One of his messages said only... "Woodstock..." What does that mean!Another message said... "I'll send you a smiling picture of Kramer when he comes to get them...". I responded by just letting the seller know that I'd love to see that picture! I really appreciate this forum and our members. I know that we all don't share the same ideas about drums, pricing, knowledge, etc. But, for the most part, we've been one big happy family. And, like families, we sometimes get into arguments with each other...that eventually blow over and we're all buddies again! That's how it should be!-Mark

Yes, I understand that this seller come across as somewhat "special" and I don't want the focus to be on that person-or any particular individual example. What I'm now talking about is the idea of people thinking that, if there is enough of a gang gathered in agreement, then that gang can adopt a self-appointed "authority" and patrol the internet for what they perceive as wrongs that need to be righted. That's just so wrong, in my mind, I don't even know where to begin. I believe the exact opposite of that. I believe that the internet allows individuals to act individually. Sure, every now and then, eyebrows may raise at a listing made by a wishful thinker, but so what?

I want to see the picture of him handing the drums over to Joey Kramer, too.
