Nice bollero snare drum !

Hey MIJ guys. Was wondering if anyone can tell me a little more about this nice Bollero snare drum I found? I've been searching for a spare "beater" snare drum and came across this little guy. I'm going to check it out this week and if it's in good shape, I'll be taking it home. However, you purists may shake your heads at this, but I will be changing the throw off and butt plate to be more gig worthy and reliable, and don't really care about extra holes. I think it has potential to be a nice sounding snare drum, and so I'll be giving it a nice overhaul. Hopefully the wrap is in tact. Not sure what the finish is called, but it's like a blue oyster sparkle, which I've only seen once before. As always, any info or input is appreciated ! I've posted a pic of the actual snare drum.

Cheers,

Rob

There was a full set of MIJ drums in that finish for sale on CL all the way across the country in Oregon or Washington State a few weeks ago for $60. Someone got them, cleaned them up, and re-sold them for $350 a couple days later!

Wow ! $60 is a stupid cheap deal for that kit ! Actually, the rest of the kit, minus the floor tom, is also up for sale, and also looks like its in good good shape. Bass drum is missing front hoop and t rods and claws. If it weren't for those missing elements, I'd buy the entire kit and resell it, but keep the snare drum..

Nice snare!! If you get it I would NOT change any thing on the drum.

The drums finish is a rare one to came by.

Bollero drums were made by Pearl from about 1964 to the first part of the 70's if I recall right 1974..

The shell is 5ply with rings from 1964 to 1970 then the shells were 5 ply no rings

With new heads this 8 lug drum will sound pretty good.

Hello Rob,

by that pic, It is a little hard to see what the actual color looks like

Is it a combination of black and silver sparkle?

Or black and gold sparkle?

If it is the black and silver I think it is called Galaxy and is a Pearl made finish

And pretty darned scarce

I would be interested in the remaining drums you mentioned

especially so if they are center lug design?

I have had this 14" floor tom in Galaxy finish for years

and have yet to find any matching drums for it

And while I cringe at the thought of that snare being modified to be more playable

It is of course yours to do with what you please. and I hope you get the sound you want from it

I would still love to have the bass and tom with my floor tom

Hi Mikey777,

Thanks for the info on the snare drum.. I actually picked it up today and took it apart for cleaning. All the parts and hardware were just dusty with some grime, and a little stiff, but zero rust. Shell is in round, and bearing edges are pretty clean, however i will sand down a 220 grit to remove the miniscule bumps and rough parts. The wrap is in tact with no cracks or spider webbing around lugs and seam is nice and tight.

I will also lacquer the interior with 2 light coats to protect the wood. The wrap looks to be a silver/ black sparkle oyster. It's bubbled around parts of the shell, but nothing major. As I said, this will be a spare "beater" that i will leave at one of the places I play every month. And here's the best part. 10 LUGGER ! Yes, a nice 10 lugs for a nice wide tuning range. Mine is the 5 ply with no re-rings. I wil post pics once the drum is fnished, but first i have to get all the necessary items to bring it to like new playing condition.

Cheers,

Rob

Hey Michael !

Great hearing from you again. I think I may end up keeping this one simply because the finish will go nicely with my now powder blue painted Stewart bass drum, and of course, the fact that its a 10 lug drum, makes for an even sweeter deal. I paid all of $35.00 !!

Sweet deal and a steal for this drum !

Cheers,

Rob

Hey Kenwood.

The snare is the exact same as finish as your floor tom. The floor tom that I assumed was missing is also with the kit, as the pawn shop didn't post the pic yet when I first posted my comment. I suggested to the guy at the shop to not separate the kit as they planned on doing. I think fellow forum member drumfx would be interested in this kit. The most hilarious thing I found with these drums is that the Bollero badge is a sticker ! The snare had half the badge, but when I touched it, the remainder of the badge just disintegrated in flakes.Laughing H I thought for sure by the pics that kit was an aluminum badge. Live and learn I guess. I know some of you guys will gnash your teeth at the thought of me modifying this drum, but the good news is it'll be more reliable and gig worthy, cause the last thing i need is for one of those tiny throw off screws to go missing or fly off as I'm playing. Oh, and the drums are not center lug.

Here's the link to the ad for the floor tom.
