From K.O.

Way back when (this debate has been going on for decades) someone (I forget who) suggested calling the set configuration with the slightly deeper bass drum a "Jazzaire".

With a nod to the heathens of yesteryear, I present my recently acquired 14x18 "Jazzaire".

Looks like someone got to that finish

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

*cough*

I probably made a lot of people angry over the years...sorry.

You know, you could even do a guilt-free cutting down of the shell to 18x12, if you wanted...

But why? 14x18 works just as well for all practical purposes. That's the standard "bop" bass drum size for every other manufacturer...and Ludwig might have considered it as such as well since they sold that size too. This whole thing hinges on why Ludwig happened to use the shallower one for their catalog outfit. It might have been because someone thought it sounded better. Maybe someone felt that compactness was the major selling point of that set, so smaller was better. Maybe the smaller bass drum in the outfit gave Ludwig just a bit more profit margin on the tiny number of sets they seem to have sold. Who knows? It just happened to work out that way.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to find a genuine Jazzette someday, complete with the little bass drum...but I don't quite get why having a 14" deep bass drum is such a deal breaker for so many, or at least a disappointment ("oh it's a 14") . Nothing wrong with Gretsch/Slingerland/Rogers/Leedy 14x18s but a Ludwig that size is second class somehow. Just kind of weird, that's all.

Here's a Jazzette for $1600 Canadian, $1200 USD

Someone needs to buy this, I wish it were me but I've had an expensive couple of days.

I have a 69-Gretsch Bop Kit and a 14x18 is the size for a standard bop kit. I don't have that negative visceral reaction to a 14x18, it's legit AF for Jazz. Most of the heavies played a 14x18. I'd love a 12x18 Ludwig because that was the original size for the outfit but don't at all feel any sense of loss. A 16x18 though - now that's totally another story! Unacceptable :)

I have an 18x16 RC floor Tom that a friend wanted to buy to convert to a bass drum.

That’d be a cannon!

(No way I’d sell an original 18” RC floor Tom by the way!)

That could be a sweet deal for someone, although the large lugs and the muffler placement on the 12", as well as the color, don't quite fit with the early 70's birthdate the seller is stating.

How about the Ludwig "Jazztette" ? Just one extra letter, the word is just slightly longer and sounds almost the same.... ;)
