That's right. The reason for that "woe" is due to the fact that, subsequently, those catalogs are the only "official" reference we collectors have to use. Anyone could have ordered a kit in virtually any configuration. That's absolutely a fact. And many people did just that. Ludwig, however, decided to make up a few of their own configurations and name them. These named configurations are the ones that collectors strive to get. Some of them, like the Super Classic kits, were so ubiquitous, they are still comparatively available. But, other named configurations, like the Jazzette kits, became extremely rare to find in any kind of good or original condition....because there were so few of them sold to begin with.

The Jazzette that I would love to find would be a 1968 Thermogloss mahogany kit -a very late model when they had discontinued tucking the wrap into the scarf joint. The Thermogloss maple kits are lovely, too...

And I would love to find a Jet kit, too....Now THOSE are rare! I can't even remember the last time I saw Jet kit listed anywhere .....It's been a long time!

There is something mysterious and enticing about bop kits in natural wood finish. It's like the wood lives a better life, breathes cleaner air and produces a more natural sound. My 60s Gretsch Bop Kit is natural Walnut - and natural finish with most sets is definitely my preference. But back to Ludwig! Here is a pic of one of O-Lugs Jazzette kits, a 1969. I do love that Red Sparkle! :)

68, 69-ish is my favourite era for Ludwig shells too, love those beautiful clear interiors. I have Super Classic drums (in many sizes) in Gold Sparkle, including an 8x12 and 14x14. Oh to find a 12x18 bass drum in Gold Sparkle!

Not to derail the thread here, but future visitors may be interested to know that Yamaha consistently offered an 18” bass drum through the decades on the Recoding Custom line, and, as far as I’m aware, still continue to do so.

When I bought my blue kit it was literally “A la carte” and I wish I had gone for the 22x16 rather than 22x14 although the 14 is much harder to find at all now. And in cobalt blue? Forget it. When the one 20x16 bass in cobalt blue came up in about eight years of looking, I bought it.

Now 18” Yamaha kicks are no more popular than any other brand. In about ten years I have seen three kits come up and I bought one of them. But when I bought it, I was able to order a brand new RC kit with whatever size and (offered) finish, just as when I bought my blue kit. I imagine that hasn’t changed.

Again, just putting that out there for future visitors pining for an 18” kick. But by then the 24” kick will be back in vogue...

Here's my ersatz Jazzette...12/13/14/12x18. All but the 12 are 6 ply drums. The bass is a 1984 12x18 timp tom that someone nicely converted into a bass drum (I bought it on Ebay and added the rail mount) the 13 is a 12x13 power tom and the 14x14 is also a 6 ply both rewrapped. The bass drum and 3 ply 12 have their original gold sparkle wrap. They all sound great together, despite their questionable heritage.

I do have a "real" Ludwig bop set, all from the 60's but my virgin 18" bass is 14 inches deep so I know not to call it a "Jazzette", lest the catalog gods grow uneasy.

As of late I’m on the hunt for one too it’s the size that entices me

I remember years back a tread on the elusive jet kit

Gary

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Vintage Jazzette kits come up for sale about three per year on average (38 in 13 years). Orphan 12x18 bass drums come up less frequently. So it's possible. I got my kit in Feb 2004, which is when I started tracking sales. I used to do things the wrong way around and get interested in price research after I bought something. ;)

It's very early Blue/Olive with serials in the 760,000 range. That's an older snare (1963) and I've since acquired a matching Jazz Festival dated Apr 13, 1970 thanks to Mike Layton. I've also got a Supra date stamped Dec 19, 1969. So I've got the Supra if I'm being a catalog purist about what snare "belongs" with a Jazzette kit.
