It’s a term used for drums whose depth equals their diameter.

So your 14x14 and 16x16 floor Tom are “square” toms. Most 8” toms are 8x8 too. But then the 10 is not square (but over depth) at 8” deep also and finally the 12x8 is the standard depth for a 12.

To keep linearity the 10 should be 7” deep and the 8 should be 6” deep but they look a bit odd and lugs can get messy (needing staggered lugs or snare drum one piece lugs.).

I think square and over depth (usually an inch deeper than standard) drums are harder to tune and harder to position unless you play an 18” kick.

Oh ok. That makes sense. How can anyone make a "square" drum.

12x8 mounted toms are my favourites. I have a Tama on my player kit at present & have previously owned Gretsch, & Pearl toms this size. I find them a very useful size in 3 or 4 piece kits for most genres.

I don't know why anyone makes a big deal of square drums. They have been around since the 1800's and here is an example made by the great Cornelius Ward of England. He is also responsible for the patent on square headed tension rods in 1837 and the first bass drum pedal. I have not checked to see if Remo makes pinstripe heads in this size and shape...

I found another example from the wonderful Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix. If I remember correctly these were used in the festivities for the Beijing Olympics.
