I found another example from the wonderful Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix. If I remember correctly these were used in the festivities for the Beijing Olympics.

Catherine, No worries. You are absolutely right about drums in any shape. I think some of it has to do with new materials being available for making drum shells. I am not sure how good some of these designs sound, but sometimes I think we "hear" a little with our eyes. Here is a fun design from California with new space-age materials.
