So...I checked out the drums today! This Modern Solo kit is so misrepresented that I wanted to cry! CryBaby
The seller was very nice and allowed me to check out whatever I wanted. I first did the magnet test, thinking that all hoops should be COB. Only the batter hoops were COB, with the reso hoops being COS from the 70's!
Next, I removed the batter head from the floor tom to check for additional holes from those non-Slingerland mounts. Yes, you could see one original hole still showing from each bracket! Next, the top solid maple re-ring was coming apart! The bearing edges have seen better days! You could barely tell that the interior was mahogany!
While both 12" toms are original to the kit, it was obvious that Slingerland made a mistake with muffler placement. You could tell that the kit was supplied with two left-hand toms. I took the COS hoop off the bottom of one of the toms and it's obvious that the kit saw a lot of use during the "bottom heads off" craze of the 80's! Very sad indeed!
I pointed out to the seller that he had the bass drum set up backwards! He had no clue that it was this way!
Pretty much all chrome was in sad condition and all tension rods were rusty! The wrap was in poor condition as well. The one rack tom I looked at also had loose re-rings!
I was being both honest and informative with everything I saw, and the seller seemed to appreciate this. I finally told him that this kit was not in "very good to excellent" condition as described, but rather "fair" at best. I also informed him that he'd have a difficult time getting $300 for this kit and that he really should have jumped at the $600 offered by a recent prospective buyer who also checked out the kit.
He thanked me for my expert opinion and said he might just sell everything separately. I told him it was still a factory kit and should not be broken up.
Finally, I just noticed that he changed the price on eBay... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1962-Slingerland-Red-Sparkle-4-Piece-Drum-Set-Nice/202740877961?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908131621%26meid%3Df3610fdd7a7f4353b330b48128dd5265%26pid%3D100678%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D202740877961%26itm%3D202740877961%26pg%3D2481888&_trksid=p2481888.c100678.m3607&_trkparms=pageci%3Adb8171e8-b026-11e9-b871-74dbd180ac9d%7Cparentrq%3A31af1a7316c0abc5a6098b79ffff854c%7Ciid%3A1
WTF!!!! After regaining my composure, I thought maybe he changed the price so it wouldn't sell. But, then I though why not just end the auction?
I'm glad I checked out this kit, which confirmed to me that so many sellers are completely clueless when it comes to the value of vintage drums...or any drums for that matter!
