Rogers Celebrity - 45 Years Ago!

Loading...

While perusing through my networked hard drive, I stumbled upon this picture and thought I'd share it with everyone! Hard to believe that this picture was taken over 45 years ago and used in the Los Angeles Times newspaper! I sure had thick, wavy hair! Man, I feel old! I'm now 65 and having my first cataract surgery tomorrow!

The pictured kit was my 1972 Rogers Celebrity, in silver sparkle with a COB Dynasonic. I had the Celebrity for 10 years. Why, oh why, did I ever sell it?!!

The summer of this same year, 1974, I had the honor of playing with the "Society" at the first ever Jazz Jubilee up in Old Town Sacramento. What a thrill that was! I know I have a picture, somewhere, of me tuning up my Dynasonic in the hotel room. If I ever find it, I'll post it!

Anyway, I just wanted to share some memories with my VDF family!

Yes, I have 1000's of pictures and documents on my NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive.

Everyone assures me that cataract surgery is the most common surgery done. I'm sure I'll be OK, but I just hope I'll have great vision when it heals. Really looking forward to seeing clearly again!

Mark,

I was in a band in the late 70’s called “The Louisiana Purchase.” We played Dixieland in the SF Bay area, and I think we also played at a function sponsored by the ‘Society’ too.

My dad had cataract surgery in the 80’s, and it was no biggie. I’m sure they’ve refined it even more since then. Still, wishing you well!

Hi Josh!

Sounds like you also had a lot of fun with "The Louisiana Purchase"! I found out about the "Society" when I was 16 years old and played drums at a Shakey's Pizza, along with a piano and banjo player. The banjo player said he played at these jazz gatherings and I should attend one. It was fun being the youngest musician there, but I was certainly intimidated by all the seasoned "older" drummers. Now I'm the OLDER drummer! It was an excellent opportunity to learn styles other than rock n roll! This is where I learned about brushes, too!

Thanks for the good wishes with my eye surgery tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be fine!

Per grantro's request, here's another "blast from the past"! Taking drum lessons with late, great, Roy Burns. This was at Hannich Music in West Covina. There was a photographer in the store from Modern Drummer Magazine and asked if he could take a picture of Roy giving a lesson. Yes, this picture appeared in Modern Drummer! I have the magazine and will check the month/year. Roy and I look very sophisticated with our checkbooks in our pockets! Decades later, I enlarged the photo and drove down to Aquarian, where I spent about 20 minutes with Roy at his desk. He autographed the picture and we talked about drums and the industry in general. Roy was just a great guy!

Hi Mark

All the best with your surgery. Having known and talked to many who have had it the results are very good. Two good pics of you back in the day.

All the best

Great pics Mark... Saw Roy do a clinic/Big R thing in Sydney mid 70's...absolutely brilliant clinician..

My wife had cataract surgery on one eye last year and the other recently in March.. still waiting final assessment of the final outcome but they really do have it down pat these days..

I will possibly be a contender for the same at some point but will now approach it with confidence ..

Cheers

John

Hey Mark,

I really enjoy those pictures!

Good luck tomorrow! I'm sure everything will be fine. Both of my parents had the same surgery and both came out much better afterwards with no problems and they both said it was easy.

Thanks for sharing and those pictures will look even better in a few days!

Hey Mark - Thanks for sharing the cool old pics. I was hanging and giging in your neck of the woods back in the 70's. Did you ever check out Universal Drum center in Pomona ? I was the drum teacher there 75-79. Don't worry about your eye surgery - nothing to it these days.

Rock on ! - Doug
