Luddy guys: what is this????

So P87 strainer & a P34 butt? Do I got that right? Also, will the strainer and butt be worth more than the snare till I buy them? I'd like to do a quickie restore with everything just right before I put it out for sale. If the cost might be a hassle, I'll just sell the shell....BTW, I have the rims and snare wires. Your thoughts?

Actually, Ludwig made a typo with the L403. It should say it comes with the P85, not the P87.-Mark

HA! Great catch.... I must have looked at these catalogs a zillion times and never noticed that boo-boo.

The drum would be technically correct with those components (all holes filled), but the P-34 requires a specific set of snares that are not everybody's cup of tea (it features individually adjusted wires -see attached image). If you want to use an alternative set of snare wires you can use a different butt and a standard set of wires which requires a minor modification.

So to get to your question, if you don't have any of the P-87/34 and associated snare wires parts, it will be kind of spendy to replace them in order for you to flip the shell. If I recall there isn't a huge price difference between the drums mounted with a P-87/34 vs. P-85/32 (I follow Coliseums mostly). So, I don't know that outlay will be cost and time effective.

Alternatively, you could look for used parts to save some money, which is an excellent way to go over new parts. Or you could look into modifying the components. Or you could flip the shell as is and hope for the best Also, I'm not sure how popular the blue cortex would be, seems these days the natural finishes are more desired.

Here's a link to how I modified my P-87/34 to a P87/32 combo...

There's a P-87 on the bay now for $65 plus 8 for shipping. Says it in the package. No mention of the butt end.

Guys, had a look through a box of junk parts that came with the gear and found the snares and strainer. With the prices on the parts I see, I'm glad for that. Guessing I need to know what to use to secure the snares to the strainer, strainer to the shell and what the lone metal piece with the 2 holes is for if part of the strainer at all. Seem all I need now is a 3 hole butt plate. Any suggestions? Dean

There's a bar plate mark on the inside of the shell where the throw is mounted, that bar plate goes there.

Honestly if this were me, I would probably rewrap the drum and put a P-85 on there. I don't think I would care for that strainer and snare set too much. Normally I hate to suggest this kind of thing to an original drum but it's a common blue color and it's not like you would be covering over some super rare vintage drum. Having the Chicago keystone is cool and I would just re-use that badge too. That's just me though.

Dean,

I'd definitely go through that parts box again as you just may find those missing/necessary parts.

Also, here is a screen shot of the P-87/P-34 parts list from Ludwig for your reference.

You can D/L the catalog from Ludwig via the "Literature" page, or this link for a better quality image that will give you the details you need; click Replacement Parts Catalog AV-1453: https://www.ludwig-drums.com/en-us/ludwig/literature

Guys, your help has been great! I appreciate the info. Sincerely can't thank you enough. The "box of parts" I referred to is small and all that remains are a few collar tuning screws. I will have to buy the remaining parts so I can get this together and out for sale. Hoppy, are those parts catalogs somewhat current that I can order from Ludwig, or must I look here or on the secondary markets? I get nervous when I need to buy a "knurled screw, part #8."(To secure the snare wires to the strainer). What the heck---how do I even ask? D.
