Slingerland snare project -- tips??

Recently acquired Slingerland snare for a project. It was mostly the Duco that grabbed me.

So I intend to take the hardware off, clean and polish, etc.

I believe it's a mahogany shell with maple rings.

Asking for guidance, like...

I'm thinking of putting some kind of wood treatment, or oil, or something on the interior shell. Ideas?

As far as cleaning the duco paint, any especially good way to do it? Or something to avoid?

At a later date I may want to have the paint redone... I'm pretty sure I ain't up to it!

Tips and tricks?

Nice find. I have its twin.

For the inside I just Beeswax the bearing edges.

Outside: Get a bunch of micro-fiber towels. Hot water with a bit of Dawn soap to get the outer dirt/grime off. Get a high quality furniture paste wax and apply multiple thin coats with buffing between coats. When you think are done, one more coat :-). I let that set a few days and then buff and apply a couple of coats of Mequires "Quick Detail" spray wax. Buff that and done. Any questions let me know. Should be some posts of mine floating around here of duco drums. No need to repaint that one. Not the best picture.

I might try to treat the interior shell with some kind of oil... it looks very dry to me. I once treated the interior of a basswood shell to seal it a bit and the sound improved a bit.

So... I’m not thinking of anything radical, but (for a change) I thought to ask for guidance before I screw it up!

My thinking on coating the inside is wasn't done at the factory. I won't buy a drum that has been interior sealed, but that is me. Hope it goes well.

Nothing special here but I like them.

I would go with the beeswax. it doesn't leave a sheen after it dries. Oil may spot blemish.

+1 with Creighton. Also the date stamp and M stamp can be easily removed so be careful as that is part of the drums provenance. 3-ply shell with mahogany interior. The M stamp denotes that the outer ply is Maple. The thick center ply is poplar. Serial looks to be 5275 (edit; actual is 5975) and aligns nicely with Jan '63 date stamp. Mid '63 the interior ply was changed to maple so yours is one of the last with mahogany interior.

Beeswax did not do anything to my ink stamps, but if you like mold,..leave them susceptible to moisture.
