Ludwig or Rogers.

Hi,

I'm looking to add another great snare drum to my collection, a drum that I will play regularly, and hopefully become an investment. The drums I'm thinking about are an 80's/90's ludwig black beauty, or the new Rogers wood Dynasonic.

What are your opinions please?

Two completely different drums! I've heard good things about the new Dynasonic snare drums. Still, since you mentioned that you want a snare drum that you will play regularly and, hopefully, become an investment, then the Black Beauty wins hands down! The Black Beauty should work for you in any venue, while the use of the Dynasonic is limited. Go for the BB!

I've never owned, or played, a Black Beauty, but I do know it is a wonderful snare drum. I believe that the years you are talking are very desirable. Post some pictures when you get it!

I traded a Black Beauty.. and a Supraphonic for a Rogers Dyna-Sonic, and got the better of it.

As for the new Dyna-Sonic.. limited isn't something I would call it. A choice you would need to make for yourself. If you are prone to like the Ludwig with its rather marginal throw off, it may be the drum you want. I had the Supersensitive edition and found it to be over rated, like going to a pig farm and expecting to find a race horse. The new Dyna-Sonic … is excellently well made, sensitive in a way that Super only promised on paper but could not deliver.

Why not buy a vintage brass over chrome Dyna and get the best of both ?

Both drums are excellent choices, however, what style or situation your going to use it in has to be considered. Both are versatile drums. The BB will cover a wider range, but as the owner of a “new” 6.5” wood Dyna, don’t sell it short! You certainly won’t get a deep woody tone from a BB. Personally, my COB Supra is my go to snare for most occasions. But if I desire a woody, mellow tone I’ll grab the Dyna.

Be careful with 90s Ludwigs, the Imperial lugs of that time have a problem with the screw bosses breaking off, I speak from experience.

Thanks so much for all your opinions. All the snare drums I currently own are wood shell, Ludwigs, wfl and Radio Kings.

I've just bought a new black beauty, and am considering a Rogers wood Dynasonic in a few months time,
