'59 Ludwig Trans Badge Super Classic OBP

VERY Thankful to be adding this Time Capsule

1959 Transition Badge Super Classic No. 980P Outfit in Oyster Black Pearl with the optional 14 x 14 FT. Calfs still on tom & bass drum. So nice, I'm actually using them & they sound fantastic. Many thanks once again to Steve Maxwell Vintage Drums for another off the charts piece of Ludwig Drum history.

Drums are dated as follows in red ink on the beautiful mahogany shells:

14 x 22 bass drum May 6 1959

9 x13 tom May 6 1959

5.5 x 14 snare July 22 1959

14 x 14 FT unreadable

It's been a good year to stay sober.

I didn't realize the oyster pearls were available in 1959.

Thanks! Yes, it was first introduced in the 59 catalog and can be seen on the Las Vegas Cocktail Kit. However, I also own the earliest known example. A WFL Buddy Rich kit from April 1956. You can check out that at the NSMD link here:

Question regarding the spurs. I just sold a 1959 transition badge 20", but it had telescoping spurs, not the foldout spurs on your bass. Which spurs were standard? Were the foldout spurs offered on the higher-end models and telescoping on the lower budget models? My bass originally had nickel hardware and lugs so I'm guessing my bass must have been a budget model. Just curious.

While I am not certain it was an absolute standard, I believe the telescoping spurs were generally used on the smaller 18" and 20" bass drums, possibly because the rods were shorter. I recalled recently that somebody here has a set of super classics with telescoping spurs from the early mid-sixties I believe, and they looked quite short and were mounted much closer to the bottom of that 22" drum. On the 22" Super Classic bass drums folding gull like spurs seems to have been the "standard" earlier on in the 60's.. I have a circa 1962 pre serial set of super classics in WMP. It not only has the same spurs as the OP's bass drum, but it has the same older tom mount location between the lugs near the edge of the bass drum. You will see both the same spurs and the same location of the tom mount in the Super Classic photos in Ludwig's catalogs of the early 60s.

Agree with above.

And remember this was a "transitional" time for Ludwig so it was really anything goes in the factory. And you could probably order the drums with what you would like just like now. Thanks for all the comments. This kit SINGS! :)

I agree they sing. Your kit is virtually identical to my WMP set except for the wrap color and floor tom legs and hardware. By 1962 the tom legs and hardware had changed. Your floor tom legs look like the earlier WFL legs.
